He plans to hire a small car over there to do his traveling in. The other taxi driver was a fishing enthusiast. He spends his days off on a Sheepshead Bay fishing boat. This taxi driver also was high in his praise of his wife's cooking. "She's the best cook in the city." said he. "There's no doubt about it. I hope he tells her that. Sidelights Let's dispose of the question as to who was the shortest WAC in the recent war. Willa Olivalo, of San Francisco, in the WACS for two years, says her height is four feet, ten inches. Any chal lengers? Asking Queries from clients. Q. Do you remember the vaudeville act of Raymond and Caverly? A. Very well. They were German dialetc comedians. Q. I claim all these clubs for tall young peo ple are for both men and women. My friend claims there are some for tall girls only. A. Your friend is right. As for example, the Chicago Tall Girls Club is for females only. This club not only conducts social affairs, but members exchange views on the problems of lengthy young ladies, Including where they can find clothes, shoes ana stocKings to fit them. Hones & Women Many women who are now not so good looking would be raving beauties if the shape of their noses could be altered, lallulah Bankhead had her nose length' ened at the suggestion of Augus tin St. John, British portrait painter, who said that by so do ing her face would have more symmetry. Counting How long would it take to count up to a million, counting eight hours a day? That's what a Brooklynite asks. Depends up on speed of the counter. rasi man might do it In eight days. There s something for tnat Mil waukee checker-upper to go to work on. The questioner is just referring to counting up to a million. I don't know how long it would take a bank clerk to count a million silver dollars. Passing By Allan Dwan. Veteran film di rector. Mr. Dwan is an astute student of the comparative peed of thoroughbred horses. In brief, a clever handicapper. But that's another story. Check As to astrology, let's check. For example, Eleanor Roosevelt is a Libra (Sept. za-uet. zz). me itargazers say Libras are witty, amusing and good conversation- lists. Also that they are inter ested in being famous and love to be in the public eye. That they are strong-willed and want to dominate their households. Also, thut they strongly dislike house keeping. How do you think that checks with the character of Eleanor Roosevelt or any Libra woman you know? Briefly Referring to a woman who has had five sets of twins, a Boston- ian wants to know if it's a w o r 1 d's record. It isn't. Mrs. Lydia Fifield, of East Thompson, Conn., has given birth to seven sets of twins. That s the world s record. . . . Has your wife a trim ankle? If so, that's good. Besides being an aid to appearance, a trim ankle is said to be a sign of a healthy heart. Please Note A recent dispatch reported Jim Cagncy, the actor, slightly injured himself while trying to shoot a coyote near his Cold- water Canyon home in Beverly Hills. Jim's house is about four miles from the Beverly Hills business section. Several years ago a Los Angeles taxi driver itold me his cab had been blocked (by a mountain lion in the hills above Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street.. All Oregonians Have Stake in Tourist Industry (This is the fourth in a series of five articles prepared by prominent Oregon newspaper men giving background infor mation on the tourist industry in Oregon. Some SI 10 million was brought into the state last year by visitors from other states and countries, and this week has been designated as "Tourist Host week" by Gov. Douglas McKay. It has been pointed out that ail residents of the state benefit from the industry, and that citiiens who are informed regarding the scenic beauties and history of the state will have an advan tage in dealing with tourists. Money supplied by the tourist may buy the gas sta tion attendant's new Sunday suit. A family who first visited Ore gon as tourists spent $500 last year when, returning as Oregon residents, they had their teeth repaired by a dentist in a coastal city. The dentist is an enthusias tic supporter of his area's tour ist promotion committee today. Income Up 5 Times When one Oregon community "went out after" tourist business, its income was increased five fold. The most spectacular busi ness gains were registered in the beauty parlors where the ladies (bless 'em) tidied up after a hard day's fishing. As a shoe retailer puts it, "I don't sell many shoes to tour ists, but I sell plenty of them to other people whose incomes de pend on tourists." Money spent in our state by visitors is live, dynamic money. It circulates through our chan nels of trade and changes hands many times over. It is a stimu lant to business throughout our economic life as it helps each to buy from the other. Aids Whole Economy When, last year, our visitors left in Oregon more than $63 for every person in the state, it meant more income from our people to buy suits, cosmetics, operations, food, insurance, lum ber, commodities and services of all kinds. Our governor, during this Tourist Host week, calls upon us to be better tourist hosts. He is really asking us to help ourselvef by doing a better selling job to our visitors. It is obvious that they will spend more time and money with us if they stay longer in our state; it is equally appar ent that they will stay longer if they are made to fell welcome. Everyone in Oregon has a stake in our tourist industry. Be ing a good host means extra in come, besides bringing the satis faction of helping our visitors ap preciate the beauty and friendli ness of our state.
