FHONE 24211 MAIL TRIBUNE Your Health and Its Care t, OK WILLIAM IKADY, M.D. Raiders should sddrass Inquiries Hi Dr. William Brady, 26J II CarnlM, Brl Hill. Calif. THE OLDEST READER It must be decade ago or more that some trick healer nunchert trie c-auuru about Inc n o n- existence of Dr. Wm. Brady. No such person the charlatan assured h i s customers. Dr Wm Brady is Just a pen name used by the medical trust, the A m e r 1 c a n Medical Asso ciation or a kit. Brady "syndic ate I of allopaths to get their propaganda to the gullible public. Some of the customers believ ed the yarn. After ail, the com pany or firm that distributes my column to newspapers, as a wholesale merchant distributes shoes or soap to retail dealers, is technically known as a "syn dicate" in the newspaper world. .Viol-cover, prior to the advent of the late Pooh-Bah of the Amer ican Medical Asociation, the : Association and I got along hap : pily together, although in re cent years we have had practi cally no use or love for each other. Alive or dead, real or fictional, 1 1 have been carrying on like i this for more years than some readers have lived. Last year it I occurred to me that there might be some one somewhere who re members when this column first ; appeared in the newspaper. So 1 invited old timers, u any have ! survived, to tell me how long they have been reading these vagaries of mine and I offered an autographed $5 set of the complete works Little Lesions in the Ways of Health by way of my compliments to the oldest reader. Some readers went all out to win the prize declaring they i have been reading this column since from two to ten years be fore its initial appearance in print. 1 was disappointed with the response to the invitation most readers who responded merely said they had been reading my column a long time, but a few of them presented any specific evi dence to indicate how long. When the contest began to drag out endlessly reports com ing in at intervals over a period of months 1 lust interest, filed everything, and snuck off on a voyage to South America, Tlrs tan da Cunha, Capetown, Dur ban, Zanzibar, Aden, Suez, Cairo, etc., hoping that the entries would be all in by the lime 1 got back home. Well, they're all In. So am I. When I catch up again we'll go over the file and select sev eral names, readers who have apparently followed ths rolurnn for quite a while, and send them the works. But the Oldest Readers actu ally turned up only this last week, neither of them as con testants, but Just casually. One of them didn't write to me at all. He wrote to an old friend who had mentioned in a letter meeting me on the bowling green. "I came here" (small mid-west town) "about thirty years ago and started reading his daily column nut lung after that time. 1 have found his writ ings highly entertaining and ben eficial to me in a number of 1 KEMHK The New Way to Color Concrete Porches, Steps and Walks A Permanent, Penetrating Stain CAN NOT WEAR OFF Sunday. My Jl. 1S50 SEEMS A BIT DOTTY ways, and to members of my family. We have never gone in fur patent medicines . . . give Dr. Brady credit for this . , , good grammar, good English . . ." My bowling green crony handed me the letter with the remark that is was evidently my grand father his friend referred to. Grandpa probably never even heard of a syndicate! The other letter was not writ ten to me incidentally, why don't people tell me these things? but to a relative of mine in regard to a school. The correspondent wrote: "I have taken great interest in your ol' man's" ( my trans lation of the term the corre spondent used) "daily column for the past 29 years and my mother did the same before me up until her passing three years ago at the age of 80 years . . ." Up to a point this seems fairly credible but even I can't guaran tee the accuracy of the gentle man's report if he intends to im ply that his mother followed my column for 25 years before he took over. This correspondent added a postscript: P S. Your father presented us with a set of Little Lessons in the Ways of Health a few years ago which we prize most high ly. (This probably refers to the school with which the corre spondent is connected). A few years ago I thought it might contribute to health edu cation if I gave teachers and schools the works without charge but I soon found it was a futile idea practically nobody ever re- Dorted making any particular use of the booklets after I had sent complimentary set. Take tlus correspondent, for example. "We prize highly" does not indicate that the Little Lessons have been used as lessons or other wise in the school. Librarian: teachers, physi cians, dentlsu lormeriy mey were on the free list. But not any more, unce iney gei me goods without cost, thai s ine last one hears of them. Now they're Just people, so far as I'm concerned. Book Treasures Given To Duke University Durham. N. C U.R) One of the most valuable literary prizes to come out of Europe since tne war is now In Duke University's library. The famous Mazzonl library of Florence, Italy, has arrived and Duke scholars are fascinated. Containing nearly 100.000 vol umes, the Mazzoni collection cov ers all Italian uieraiure irom early days to the present, with its greatest strength In the Renais- nce and 18th centuuy periods. The books once were the per sonal collection of Sen. and Prof. Guldo Mazzoni of the University of Florence. Leaves No Money Professor Mazzoni spent his life and substance "spent all the lesser pearls" for this "pearl ol great price." He told his chil dren he left them no money, but I do have books and them I shall leave to you." It turned out that they were more valuable In post-war Italy than anything else he could have left. Duke's acquisition of the li brary was a lucky happening. Dr. Allen Gilbert, professor of Eng lish at Duke, was on sabbatical leave In Florence during the spring and summer of 1948. He saw the library, notified the Duke authorities, and started the deal moving.
