His profit is being cut down from time to time by compeiilion, and by the companies that he buys from which are making the margin of profit less as time goes on. h. The banks are being forced to make his loans harder to get, due to the fact that most banks are working under Federal control of insured accounts up to $5,000, and there fore loans are more hazardous for the small business man who is doing a credit business. I. Last, but not least, consumer credit, which has now hit the $1 9,000,000 mark, is making collections much harder every day as more people buy more stuff on the installment plan. THE UNSOLVED BH EUMATISM RIDDLE Dr. brady Ten or twenty years ago phy sicians who were recognized as specialist or authorities were i fond of de scrining sever al formi or kinds of joint .trouble ol grad ual d e v e 1 op ment and long duration (chronic), such as chronic in f e c t i o n s (caused by germs, arthri tis, atrophic (wast ing) ar thritis, hyper trophic (thick ening, enlargement of Joints) ar thritis, rheumatoid arthritis (re sembling rheumatism, whatever that may be), arthritis deformans and osteo-arthritis (inflammation of both Joints and bones). To the untutored layman, as 1 the daily mail tells me, this term arthritis seems pretty sig nificant. Actually it has no spe cial siijnificance. It is merely a S2 medical word for Joint in flammation. The layman com ilains to the doctor of painful, lame or sore Joints. The doctor shakes his head over the situa tion and informs the patient that it is a touch of arthritis. That seems to satisfy the curiosity of Ihe untutored layman. Having "tried" what ever the doctor ad vised or prescribed without any noticeable benefit, th1" untutored layman takes a whirl at what ever nostrum or diet or other emedy or treatment for "arthri- is" he happens to come across, erchance after a , year or two f such experimentation he vrites to ask what I think would e good for a case of chronic irvhritis. It might seem that after wait ins! so long I should have a rem edy to suggest for the poor geek. But I haven't. Aside from simple ai.algcsics or pain-killers 'and various physical measures to combat or prevent various com olications. I just don't know of anything that is likely to do any ftreat good. As I have been trying to tell ' ou children ever since Tony vas a pup. this column is not a long-distance clinic nor a mail order therapeutic institute. My rovince is physiology, hygiene and health. I try to teach you how to keep well and how to pre vent disease. That's all. Physicians recognized as au thorities today generally agree that it is not only impracticable but useless to attempt to classify rhronic joint disability under the types above mentioned. They ;eem to regard these several forms of chronic joint "inflam mation'' as various manifesta tions of physical degeneration, as nearly as 1 can understand their language. Of course the term rheuma tism has no particular meaning even though a million gullible leeks squander time and money on medicines, diets, bath, queer doctors and trick lamps in the fatuous hope that the treatment will do them good. If any one gets any relief or notices any im Drovemont in what ails him from a course of treatment for rheu matiz it is coincidental. The term arthritis means joint inflammation. If a patient con sults a doctor for sore, lame, stiff or painful joint or joints and the H SOMETHING to talk about Bohemian Club pale is really "something"... something to talk about. It's the beer lovers dream of how good beer can be, the beer every one has been waiting for. If you crave a real taste thrill, treat yourself to beer goodness. ... FIR ST., MEDFORD doctor pronounces the trouble arthritis and prescribes medicine, diet or other measures by way of treatment, the patient is dumb customer and the doctor knows it. It is as childish to believe "arthritis" is a peculiar malady due to this or that cause as it is to believe rheumatiz is due to damp climate, red meat or ex posure. In most instances of chronic or long-lastnig joint trouble called "arthritis" there is no inflamma tion at all. For that reason alone the term arthritis doesn't even convey a hint as to what really ails the joint. That other term, physical de gtnorallon, conveys so much meaning that we had better talk about it another day.
