Call. RATTLE THOSE BONE! B In line with Darwin's theory concerning the survival of the fittest, untold thousands of years have contrib uted to the ul timate selec tion of the type of bones we now pos sess. Bonis have been shortened, length ened, thin ned and thickened ac cording to the n a e d s of the Individual competing for I ai.fi Ai 1 Us. Brady survival. Mod' ern man has little natural need for the bony structure of the Neanderthal or other primitive man. The highly unnatural and excessive strains placed upon bones in what is called "sport" such as football, can hardly be expected to contribute much to the bony formation of the man of the remote future. Many thousands of years from now, the effect of modern labor saving devices may result in the development of a species of man of considerably lighter bony frame-work than that endowing man today. Man today has a bony frame work capable of resisting enor mous stresses but with certain and often unsuspected limita tions. According to the National Bureau of Standards, human bone has double the Inherent strength of seasoned hickory and about one-fourth of that of cast iron. Sections of bone removed from the extremities can with stand a pressure of 23,000 pounds before giving way, yet the same bones give way to twisting strain at 3,000 pounds per square inch. Strong as bones may be, the tendons and ligaments attached to them may remain intact after the bone has snapped. Stresses applied counter to the usual or bit or range of a bone's move ment can be resisted to a point for beyond that applied in a twisting or rotary manner. Thus fractures (any break is a frac ture) may occur in the presence of semingly slight injuries. Many persons are reluctant to undergo the expense of an x-ray exam ination of an injured area be cause they feel that the force involved was insufficient to cause a fracture. A case in point involved a ballet dancer. Years of practice had produced enormously strong and supple muscles which en abled her to leap about effort lessly and land "light as a cat." In a routine practice drill, she noticed a stinatns naln in her leg following a leap in which "landing abruptly stopped a twisting turn. X-ray examina tion of the leg revealed a frac ture extending two thirds of the way up the entire outer bone of the leg. Elderly persons are often said to "fall and break their hip." Ac tually more of these people break their hip first and fall afterward. The break Is caused Anti- Picketing injunction Refused Roseburg, Ore., May 17 (U.R) Circuit Judge Carl E. Wlmberly refused to grant an anti-picket-ing injunction to the Umpqua Dairy against the Umpqua Val ley Milk Producers association here late yesterday. In his nine -page decision, Judge Wimberly said the associa tion's picketing was legal, be cause it was not a strike as de fined by law. The decision questioned the distinction between an associa tion such as the milk producers and a union. It said the court felt that if picketing by labor unions was legal, ao was that of a farmers' organization. The judge criticised State Milk Administrator Thomas L. Ohlsen for his failure to act when the dispute over minimum milk prices arose. Jacksonville and Butte Falls each reported one case of chick en pox, Talent three cases of in fluenza. Central Point one case of measles and Trail one case of pneumonia.
