In the event of an A-bomb or H-bomb attack on the District of Columbia, the 1,000 residents of Perryopolis have made a standing invitation to the gov ernment to "move In with us." They still believe that George Washington, founder of the town, was right when he called Perry opolis (then known as New Bos ton) the Ideal place for a capital city. Surveyed Town Washington helped survey and plan the building of the town, bought a tract near the center of the village and arranged for 11 streets to lead into It, as they do today. Some congressional, military and business leaders have urged that government offices be dis persed from their present con centration in Washington. They argue that an A-bomb or H-bomb attack would paralyze govern ment functions. One of Perryopolis' older fam ilies has records kept through the years which reveal that Washington wanted to establish the nation's capital farther in land than the present site on the Potomac river. The old family diary said Washington was ready to estab lish the capital at Perryopolis or some other suitable site in Fayette county when the col onies defeated the British. Did I ever tell you I was a school teacher for a cou ple of years? 1 did all right fi nancially at it, too. But that is because I was also an athletic coach. It was at prep schools in Virginia and California. In addi tion to my salary, I received full living expenses. Had a vacation at Easter, another at Christmas and two and a half months in the summer. Pretty soft, what? Yep, I gave it up. Had a chance to get into the newspaper busi ness. I liked that better. Asking Queries from clients. Q. You say the majority of film stars women have gone wild about were or are less than six feet tall. Name a few of these under sized heart-throbs for a red haired subscriber who likes her men tall and terrific; around six feet two. A. Some Hollywood heart-throbs under six feet in height who deeply stirred the hearts of millions of females were Franvis X. Bushman, Ru dolph Valentino, John Gilbert, Charles Boyer and Clark Gable. Passing. By Lewis Moore, concert pianist from Texas. There have been many beautiful actresses and musical comedy stars from Texas who have achieved success in New York, but Mr. Moore is first concert pianist from the Lone Star state who has made a hit in the Big Town. That is, if my memory serves me right. Or do I lose another stogie? . . . Polly Burson. Comely young woman engaged in the highly hazardous occupation of Holly wood stunt girl. Polly gets $75 a day for ordinary stunts but much more for difficult ones. As for example, she was paid $300 for falling down a stairway as a double for Barbara Stanwyck. Bartlett St. dren you have a better chance of raising a genius than if you had a large family. I question that. I could fill this column with names of men and women of genius who have been members of large families. Other Matters Mary Pickford appeared in her first film over 40 years ago. It was titled "The Violin Maker of Cremona" and was a one reel Biograph picture released July 7, 1909. ... In 1003 a passage from Europe to the United States could be bought for ten dollars in the steerage class. In that year 857,048 immigrants from Europe were admitted to the United States. "The five essentials of happi ness," a very wise man observed, "are health, freedom, economic independence, congenial work and recriprocated love. And the most important of these is the last." To settle an argument be tween a couple of Philadelphians it is hereby stated it was in a play titled "Sunday" that Ethel Barrymore spoke the line: "That's all there is, there isn't any more." ... As you pore over your racing form these days don't forget the old racetrack saying: "Never bet on a mare in the spring." Collector's Item As youngsters Georgie Jessel, Walter Winchell and Georgie Price were members of Gus Ed wards' Song Revue company You knew that, no doubt. Well, anyhow, a San Franciscan tells me he has seen a copy of a piece of sheet music of Gus Edwards' song "If I Was a Millionaire," and that on the cover are the pictures of Masters Jessel, Win chell and Price. A copy of sheet music like that should certainly be a collector's item. "A stocking manufacturer stated that Margaret Whiting had the most nearly perfect legs in the Hollywood film colony," writes a Brooklynite. "I have an aunt 53 years old who I think has better looking legs than Miss Whiting. Margaret's leg meas urements are: Thigh, nineteen and a half inches: calf, twelve inches: ankle, eight and one half inche. My aunt's leg measure ments are Thigh, ninteen inches; calf, twelve inches: ankle seven and one half inches. Plaasa Not There are many freighters sail ing the seven seas that have no doctor aboard. The question arises, what is done when a crew member becomes seriously ill in mid-ocean? On some ships prac tically nothing can be done. But the Italian ships, as well as some French and English ships, get in touch by radio with the famous Doctor Guida In his office in Rome. The captain of the ship describes the sick man's symp toms via radio. Doctor Guida or his associates name the reme dies. By this method Doctor Guida has effected some remark able cures from his office in Rome on men on ships as far as 4,000 miles away.
