checking on ex-servicemen over
looked in the first go-round of
medals and awards.
His office already has process
ed 208,000 medals and awards
to World War II fighters. An
automatic recheck is beina made
of all cases where recommenda
tions for honors were turned i
down.
Some ex-soldiers have written
in on their own hook, suggest
ing recognition for their exploits
but Kersting warns such decoration-seekers
their stories must
hold water. His staff searches
navy archives to check all
claims and, he added, the board
that passes on awards is "plenty
tough."
Talsji Must Stand
Self-told stories of war-time
feats seem to "improve'' with
time, Kersting observed; the
real controversial claim's (rum
World War II will come "about
1073." He said he is still Investi
gating claims for honors by
Spanish-American War sailors.
The longest delay in award
Ing honors to a navy hero was in
the case of Lt. Richard P. Hob
son, a native of Greensboro,
Ala., who sank the Merrimac at
the mouth of Santiago harbor,
Cuba, in an effort to bottle up
Admiral Cervera's Spanish fleet
in 1898. In 1034, President
Franklin D. Roosevelt pinned
the Congressional Medal of Hon
or on Hobson.
Hobson served four terms in
Congress from 1907 to 1915.
Marine Col. Daniel D. Porter
of Washington, D. C, waited un
til 1934 to receive the same hon
or for his 1901 exploits in brav
ing poison spears and jungle
traps to overpower a group of
insurgent Filipinos lodged In an
