Nice, if true, and some day Fred will no doubt be in that classification. But right at the moment he's rated as a local boy, and we think you'll find his program at 9 p. m. on Thurs days quite the quarter-hour. What leading character in the Footlighters' new production was asking "Why does it get so late so early?" That was on Monday evening . . . and produc tion is tomorrow evening and Friday. For you early birds who make the "Breakfast Club" part of your family's morning, here's an added note. Pick up a copy of the May 13 Collier's for a dou ble page spread on the whole gang . . . from McNeil to Sam Cowling and Aunt Fanny. If you are sure you'd know the gang any place, you're apt to be in for a little shock . . , but it will be interesting. Our Congrats to Connie Nel son, the winner on the June Story program on Monday night. The riddle had every adult we .knew looking up his western lore, but Connie came through right on the nose to cop all the prizes . . . and do it easily. Seems the reason for that is that she was born and raised in the Pendleton territory. Need we say more? An advance listening note: For you Blondie fans, tune in tomor row at 7:30 p. m. Due to a change in programming, the Blondie show, with all the laughs and all the old-fashioned humor the whole family likes, will be heard at this new time, new day, same station, starting tomorrow eve ning. For the latest news, listen to your dinner edition . . . 6-6:45 p. m. every weekday. McLeod McLeod, May 9 Mr. and Mrs. Harry Harding Jr. and daugh ters, Wrena and Laurie, Myrtle Creek, were week-end visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ar thur Hume and family, May 6. (U.PJ If a rac coon around here could list his problems, number one probably would be oysters. Yet the 'coons along the North Carolina coast, who are the same as any other 'coons more or less, just can't resist. They are fools for fresh oysters. Usually content to lie up all day and venture forth only at night, these sly animals have a weakness for seafood that proves to be their downfall. Mr. 'Coon waits until the tide is low along the marsh and then ventures out onto the oyster beds for a snack. That's where his trouble begins. Hunters Lie in Wait Hunters, who receive $5 each for live 'coons, lie in wait and turn the dogs loose just as the 'coon begins his meal. Exposed and far from his hiding place, the 'coon usually finds himself tied in a gunny sack and on the way to market before he can swallow the first mouthful. Experienced 'coo n-catchers say it's ticklish business. The dogs are battle-scarred as are the hands of the hunters. Heavy gloves are used, but even so, a vicious 'coon usually causes scars. The trick is to get the prey inside the gunny jack be fore the dogs kill him. Raccoon hunters say the dogs gradually come to realize that the object is to take tnem anve and co-operate by surrounding the animal and waiting until the hunters come on the scene. Some Gat Trapped Even more ironic is the dreary fate which befalls other 'coons who crave the taste of oyster meat. Going onto the oystet beds Just after the tide has receded, the 'coon finds the oyster open. If he incautiously places a foot in one of the yawning shells, it immediately closes and traps him. The harder the 'coon pulls, the tighter becomes the grip of the oyster. Then the tide rises and the trapped coon is drowned. Finally, as if satisfied with having punished the instruder, the oyster released its grip, and the dead 'coon bobs to the sur face, a victim of his own appetite. WILLIAM BRADY, M.D. Raadars should address inquiries lei Dr. William Brady, 265 II Camiiw, Bvrly Hills. Calif. THE LADY WA S CHAGRINED ur. Brady One with "inward," "toxic," exophthalmic (exophthalmos means protfuding eyeballs, prominent, wide, staring eyes, as though the in dividual were alarmed or frightened) goi ter, or hyper thyroidism (the general or con stitutional dis orders due to excessive func tional activity of the thyroid gland) or hy perthyreosis or (d 1 f f erent names for the same condition you see, we doc tors find these various names for the same trouble keep you dumb laymen guessing, so you are less likely to discover when we are guessing about what ails you) one with this type of goiter may show little or no apparent en largement, swelling or thicken ing of the neck just above the breastbone, but does have cer t a i n characteristic symptoms upon which the diagnosis of the disease is based. I've talked myself into a spot again, and now I must try to get out of it without doing any se rious harm. Symptoms have no place in a health column. Peo ple should not refer to, mention or tell their symptoms when they write to me for information or advice. Symptoms scare me in a letter. When a correspondent includes a brief summary of his or her symptoms, no matter how he or she words it, the request is for a diagnosis or a prescrip tion that is, for medical advice and I have only one answer for such requests, if they rate an answer at all: Consult a physi cian. Or if that seems unsuitable then I regret it is impossible to form an opinion without having examined the patient etc. etc. The characteristic symptoms and signs of exophthalmic goitre besides the wide, staring, more or less protruding or bulging eyes in mild cases the exoph thalmos is sometimes misinter preted as "large," beautiful eyes are tachycardia or rapid heart action; a fine tremor, most no ticeable In the fingers when the patient sews, writes or does other fine work; and, as I hate to say here, generally an assort ment of disturbances or com plaints commonly described as "nervousness," period. In a talk about "nerves" or "nervousness here recently i tried to arm you poor geeks against being exploited Dy mea leal merchants who string gull lhl iMiitnmera alone with "shots" and "sedatives for their "nerves" instead of finding out what, If anything, alls them ana treatine it or refusing to cater to their craving for drugs. (The lady goes into a detailed re cital of her general symptoms, which we need not mention here, except that among them are shaking and dropping things, such as dishes, pen, etc. "This is not imagination, I assure you, Dr. Brady . . ." Oh, well, I "still hope other readers may have understood what I meant. In the very article which chagrined this reader I described the case of a woman who insisted that her "nerves were unstrung" and had the as surance of some clinic rack eteers that her trouble was just her bad "nerves" until by chance she came under the ob servation of a real doctor who found she was suffering from exophthalmic goiter. But I don't know. Maybe the woman, like this correspondent who chides me for the chagrin she felt on reading my article about "nervousness," still at tributes all of her complaints to her poor "nerves." The lady assures me her symp toms are not imaginary. Excuse me a moment while I drum my fingers on the desk and gently grit my teeth. If this lady or any one else can show that I have ever in tentionally implied that "nerv ousness' or the various disturb flnrpi nr disorders attributed to "nervousness" are imaginary I'll make public apology. In the article I described sev eral other cases in which the actual nature of the disease be came evident or was recognized after a prolonged period of "just nerves" I'd rather not mention now just what ailed these pa tients, but in each case the dis ease had nothing to do with the patient's nerves.
