SIX MEDrOFD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuetday, Mar H'O Championship CAP Squadron to Lead Parade Monday Medford'i state champion civil air patrol cadet drill squadron has been asked to lead "Opera tion High School" parade here next Monday evening. Lt. Don ald Stewart, commander of the unit, has announced. The parade and other youth day activities will open National Security week observance here. Seek New Uniforms Stewart said CAP cadets here will continue their three nights per week drill sessions to per fect the squadron for regional competition at Ogden, Utah. Ex tensive measures, he reported, will be undertaken to get the unit in top form for the event. Stewart said he is seeking aid in obtaining funds for purchase of a complete set of new uniforms, including shoes, for the drill squadron. nounced a campaign to recruit additional cadets between 15 and 18 years of age. All boys and girls Interested in joining may sign up at the regular Monday meetings at 8 p.m. at the Med ford armory. Unit Commended The squadron received com mendation Sunday when Lt. Col. Hugh Angle, CAP air inspector, paid an official call to look over the unit and its program. Colonel Angle, inspecting the squadron's plane, reportedly found lt in better condition than when it was delivered to Medford. Medford cadets won the state drill title here Sunday compet ing with Portland squadron No. 1. The event followed several months preparation In which the Medford unit was helped con siderably by MSgt. Samuel R. Bailey, national guardsmen. Officers of the local group ex pressed their appreciation for the use of the high school foot ball field and the public address system Sunday. Jockey Sammy Palumbo won 524 races at Charlestnwn, W. Va., race track from 1038 to 1949. If the Great Wall of China were superimposed on the Unit ed States. Dress Rehearsal For Torchbearers Held Last Night Dress rehearsals for "The Torch-Bearers." three-act satiri cal comedy to be produced by the Footlighters civic theater group, got underway last night at the Medford senior high school where the play will be presented Thursday and Friday of this week. With an occasional "flat" that flapped and bells which didn't ring, the cast none the less gave a portrayal of what George Kel ly, the playwright, intended to show what "little theaters" should not be but too often are. Rehearsal Shown The first act shows a rehearsal in all its unglamorous rawness, and a bevy of characters all very painfully familiar in "little thea ter." The second act shows the collapse of what was intended to be a play, with nothing spared. All the silly attitudes and acci dents are there, from the out raged directress to the villain's unadhesive mustache. The third act puts across the message, leaving the actors re freshed at having seen them selves as they really are. The plot revolves around Mrs. Pampinelli, played by Mrs. Laura Porter, who instigates the whole "artistic mess." The typi cal "leading light." she showers the piny with theatrical bro mides and bellows the constant call to the torch-bearers. Nelly Fell, played by Mrs. Frankie Burton, lends gaiety throughout. Her official capacity as promptress always seems sud- ordinate to ner conversational tendencies with the young men. Others in the cast include Hal Newhouse, Charlene Pike, Ber nard Kelly. Jim Sullivan, Keitn Hopkins. Kenny Bushnell, Mrs. Milo Hunt, Mrs. E. D. Hampson, Beverly Hampson and Aubrey Harris. She is sponsored by the Phoenix Lions club. In second place is Miss Wanda Norton, PTA candidate who jumped from 1,835 votes Friday to 6,348 Monday. Holder of third place is Miss Shirley Dud ley, Phoenix Thimble club can didate, who added enough votes over the week-end to bring her standing from 2.899 to 6,242. Other Candidates Other candidates and their vote count are Miss Sally Tripp, Phoenix Thursday club candi date, 2,316; Miss Rosalie Klas sen. Phoenix Grange candidate, 1,655 and Miss Barbara Barlow, sponsored by the Phoenix Youth group, 3,101. The queen contest will end Friday, May 12, and the queen will be announced crowned Sat urday before the parade which is to start the festival.
