Newspaper Page TextFOURTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tueiday, May 9, 1950 Nazarene District Assembly To Open Here Wednesday The annual district assembly of the Oregon-Pacific district of the Church of the Nazarene con venes at the Medford Church of the Nazarene on Wednesday at 9 a.m. Addresses of welcome will be eiven bv Mayor Diamond Flynn, the Rev. Meredith Groves, ! president ot the Meaiora Minis terial association, and the local pastor, the Rev. P. J. Bartram. Dr. Weaver W. Hess, Portland, is the district superintendent The presiding officer of the as sembly will be Dr. Hardy C. Powers, Dallas, Tex., general superintendent. In his administrative duties as one nf the ecneral superintend ents of the church, Dr. Powers travels extensively in supervis ing and planning the extension nf the work in foreign fields, as well as in the United States and Canada. In a recent trip of this nature he visited the mission field of the church in Africa This was preceded by an exten sive tour of the worn in central and South America and the Brit ish West Indies. In addition to his work as cpnrral sunerintendent. Dr. Pow ers is also the sponsor of the Ynunff People's socie ty, a world-wide fellowship of tha vnune Deoole of the church It is this organization, under Dr. Power's sponsorship, that is largely responsible for the open ins of the Church of the Naza rene in Australia. On a recent trip to Japan he visited leaders on several of the islands and in terviewed Gen. Douglas Mac- Arthur on the future of the work. R.llv Slated Dr. Powers will speak at 7:30 p.m. today in a missionary rally at the Church 01 the nazarene. He will bring messages to the assembly at 9:00 a.m. Wednes day, Thursday and Friday morn ings. About 250 delegates and friends are in attendance for the assembly, from the 50 churches of the district. According to the Rev. Mr. Bartram, friends are cordially invited to all sessions of the assembly. The church is located on the corner of Holly and First streets. The Rev. George Coulter, dis trict superintendent of northern California, will be the speaker at evening services Wednesday evening, following the district church school rally at 7:30 p.m., which will be conducted by the Rev. POWERS Nazarene Superintendent Accordion Band Back From Washington Trip The Eve Prentice Accordion band returned Monday from Olympia, Wash., where they took part in the Olympia Centennial celebration. Highlighting the trip was the participation of the band in the parade Saturday morning. The entire parade took nearly three hours to pass the reviewing atand. Mrs. Prentices band was also featured in an hour's concert Sat urday afternoon in the grand stand of the Olympia state park opposite the capitol building. Fifteen minutes of the program was broadcast over an Olympia radio stHtion. A group of the band was taken to Ft. Lewis Saturday evening by W. C. Simpson ot the Trail way bus company, whore they entertained at two f the offi cers' club. Sunrin morning the band was featured in an hour's program in downtown Ccntralia. Wash. Climaxing a busy week-end for the band was a request by the msiiager of Jantzen Beach, Portland, to play an hour's pro gram at 3 p. m. Sunday, after which all 50 members of the band were personally entertained by the manager on the many rides of the resort. Several parents of hand mem bers also made the trip. Kaiser-Frazer Reduces Price on' '51 Kaiser Models Detroit, May 9 U.R) Kaiser Frazer corporation today an nounced reductions up to $96 on several of its 1951 Kaiser mod els. KF made the announcement as its new 12-model line was un veiled in showrooms. It was the company's second price slash since 1948. The greatest cut of $96 was made on the four-door deluxe model, which now sells at $2,099. Walter P. DeMortini, vice president in charee of sales, said KF has lowered prices on all models in the 1951 Kaiser line. The models include for the first time standard and deluxe club and business coupes, two-door sedans, and two and four-door utility sedans Prices range from $1,889 for the business coune to $2,099 for the deluxe four-door, with hydra matic transmission available as optional equipment. KF said the name of its forth coming low-priced car and win ners of its $200,000 "natne-the- car" contest would be announced tomorrow. Production of the new m Jel will start next month, and the low-priced sedan will be on sale in August. DeMartini said KF's Willow Run plant has been tooled for production of more than 300,000 vehicles annually. Legion Nominations Set Fred Homes Would Not Accept Mayoralty Ashland, May 9 Ashland City Councilman Fred Homes Mon day told the Ashland Tidings that under no circumstances would he accept the office of mayor. Mayor Tom Williams and Councilman Elmer Sheldon are targets of a recall election, to be held at the same time as the May 19 primary election, and Homes had been discussed as a nossible successor to Williams should the recall succeed. "I would positively refuse to serve in the office if nominated," Homes said. "It is my aim to continue serving as a duly elect ed councilman to the best of my ability regardless of the out come of the election, and to act in the best interests of the city," he concluded. The report of the nominatine committee will be the main busi ness at the meeting of Post 15 of the American Legion at the armory Wednesday night. Additional nominations will be received from the floor. Elec tion of post officers and dele gates will be held June 7.
