May 9 (U.R) ben. Wayne Morse (R., Ore.), warned professors at the Univer sity of Oregon here Saturday that the "ghosts of isolation are stalking the floors of the senate." A candidate for the republican renomination in the May 19 pri mary, Morse spoke to a meeting of the Association of University frotessors. Morse served as president of the Oregon chapter of the AAUP and was once dean of the univer sity s law school. He painted a gloomy picture of the foreign policy crisis, and predicted that Europe would fall to communism in two years if United States aid is withdrawn. The senator said communist domination of Europe and Asia would lead to a loss of freedom in America, "within a quarter of a century. Medford Musician Has Appendicitis Operation When Medford's high school band played in the state music contest in Eugene Saturday it was minus a cornetist. Ned Landers, instead of occupying his usual chair, was in the uni v e r s i t y infirmary recovering from an emergency appendec tomy. Ned became ill while tra veling to Eugene on the bus with his fellow players, and was taken to the infirmary shortly after arrival. However, Ted, the other half of the twin-team of Ned and Ted Landers, was in the trombone section of the band as usual. The two boys are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Landers. 513 Beatty street, and the boys' father is in Eugene with his son. Doctors said Ned would be able to come homo the middle of this week unless there are complications. SANER VIEW Speaking for myself, writes a member of Alcoholics Anony mous. I doubt very much that I would nave willing to ad mit I was an alcoholic had I been told I was a moral weak ling rather than a very sick per son who could arrest my ill ness by simply staying away from the first drink. lit. Brady When a man or a woman, through fear, escaps, frustration or various other factors, con tinues the correspondent, goes over the borderline of heavy drinking to compulsive, exces sive drinking which is called al coholism, getting well by hlm selfor herself is in most cases an impossibility. When this condi tion is reached the man or wom an is truly in the throes of an illness, which in our opinion can be both physical and mental. In telling a person who comes to us for help, continues the members of A.A., that he or she is, first, suffering from an ill ness, and, second, that something can be done about it if he or she so desires, we put the person in a frame of mind which makes him or her ready to accept the program of Alcoholics Anony mous, which is laid out in the 12 steps (For the 12 steps any reader may write Alcoholics Anonymous, P.O. Box 459, Grand Central Annex, New York 17. N.Y.) You are so right. Dr. Brady, in saying that the active alcoholic's behavior is immature, infantile and escapist. But in the process of growth which is made possi ble through the AA program, one's set of values is bound to change, and I personally have seen in hundreds of cases moral responsibility, integrity and emo tional maturity in the newly inte grated personality which has come into being through living along the lines suggested to us inthe program of recovery. (Anonymous by request). And you are so right about that, my friend, I have seen that same development of a newly in tegrated personality under the kindly, patient care of members of Alcoholics Anonymous. In deed, the great sincerity and even self-sacrifice which more advanced members of AA. de vote to new members is an in spiring thing to see, and no doubt it contributes largely to the success Alcoholics Anony mous groups everywhere have in restoring otherwise incurable inebriates to sobriety and happi ness. Oh, oh, there I spilled the beans what but a disease can be "incurable"? After all, children, it is a de tail of little consequence wheth er I call alcoholism a bad habit or a disease. When I said here a few months ago that alcoholism is not a "disease," that rather the alcoholic should be disabused of the idea that he or she has a "disease" other than that caused by the poison, alcohol, and made to realize that he or she can be rehabilitated only by his or her own determination, once the er ror of his or her infantile pat tern of conduct has been compe tently explained there was an astonishingly large reaction from readers. Readers seemed to be about evenly divided, that is, as many protested this concept of alcoholism as approved it. But on re-examination of the letters of protest and accord I am constrained to note that scarecly any of those in accord are from alcoholics (at least they do not mention their alcoholism) and many of those in protest are from members of Alcoholics Anonymous or from persons who are or have been alcoholics. I said alcoholism is not a dis ease. By the same token one may say epilepsy, migraine, an gina pectoris or schizophrenia is not a disease since between at tacks, spells or seizures the af fected individual may be nor mal, to 11 tests a physician may apply. ' The view so well expressed by the Alcoholics Anonymous cor respondent whose letter I quote above will be mine from here on. Alcoholics Anonymous can teach physicians a great deal about the nature and control of alcoholism, QUESTION'S It ANSWERS Dope Your opinion as to outcome of tak ing ( heavy dosal of benredrtne each day over a period of a year. Tax Men Optimistic On Raising Revenue Washington, May 9 (U.R) Mouse tax writers were optimis tic today about finding ways of offsetting most of the $1 billion in excise tax cuts they have ten tatively approved. Members of the tax-framing house ways and means commits tee expected to turn their atten tion this week from cutting ex cises to finding new sources of revenue. President Truman, who recom mended total excise cuts of only $695 million, warned that he would veto any bill that did not make up the lost revenue. He suggested closing "loopholes" in present tax laws to offset the cuts he proposed. Committee members thought they might get more than $400 million through "loophole" clos ing. They believed they might raise another $300 million to $500 million through a moder ate increase in the corporation income tax. This still would leave them from $100 million to $300 mil lion short in making up the full amount of the cuts. Closed Sessions for Red Hearings Urged Washington, May 9 (U.R) Sen. Ralph E. Flanders, (R., Vt.), proposed today that the senate's communist investigation be mov ed behind closed doors because it is causing "astonishment and uncertainty in our relations abroad." Flanders also suggested that the foreign relations subcommit tee investigating Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy's charges of commun ists in the state department should study present methods for assuring the loyalty of de partment officials and em ployees. He said in a resolution intro duced in the senate that the present method of procedure public sessions "can do much harm" and is affecting unfavor ably the morale of able and con scientious public servants and it is causing astonishment and un certainty in our relations abroad." Closed sessions, he said, will avoid "handicapping of our foreign relations abroad."
