Liberation sites were in stream sections expected to receive heavy fishing pressure this sea son. Release areas included the upper and middle section of the Applegate, upper sections of the Illinois, the Upper Rogue tribu taries including Butte creek. Lit tle Butte creek and the Prospect Union Creek area. The trout averaged 7Vi inches in length. The main spring trout liberation for the Rogue area was completed in March with the liberation of 110,000 yearling rainbow. Past Spawning Peak The steelhead have passed their spawning peak and anglers will probably take many "ripe" and "spawned-out" fish in the next few weeks according to Cole Rivers, game commission resident fishery agent. Rivers urged sportsmen to re lease these fish carefully and permit them to escape. One "ripe" female is the potential producer of 2,000 steelhead fry. The "spawned-out" steelhead are dark, thin and very tasteless in comparison to a fresh sea-run fish, continued Rivers. If re turned to the stream, these fish will continue their journey back to the sea and return the follow ing winter as bright, healthy fish. Cold Water Blamed A game commission study conducted on the lower Umpqua river revealed that as much as 39 per cent of the steelhead catch consisted of fish that had spawned previously. The late spawning this year is attributed to cold water accompanying the late spring. Up to April 27 only 25 Chinook salmon had been counted through the fish ladder at Gold Ray dam. The first salmon show ing at the counting station were about two weeks later than nor mal in arriving. Until the water warms up, no heavy movement of salmon over the dam is ex pected, Rivers said.
