On the Side- v- Dw,'in9 (Distributed King Iwhirw Syndicate, ImJ Recently I stated I would make no more mention of Flor ida weather. I intended to ad here to that , resolution. How ever, yesterday we ran into uch "unusual weather" I feel com pelled to mention it as an inter esting curiosity. We were riding long a highway by the sea. It was a beautiful, clear, warm day. 'Hundreds of people were in swimming. Suddenly a storm came up out of nowhere. And in the course of that storm large hailstones fell. You have to hand this to Florida weather: There is no monotony about it. You never know when it will change with out hardly a moment's notice. Birds There certainly is a wide va riety of birds in this section of Florida. Bird-checkers-up like John Kieran must have a won derful time when they come down here. I saw a beautiful bright red bird on the lawn this morning. I am not much of a bird enthusiast but this one real ly attracted my attention. John James Audubon spent consider able time in Florida gatheiing maleriul for his monumental work, "Birds of America," which sold for $1,000 a copy by sub scription. Audubon discovered and named that bird known as the Key West pigeon. This bird is included in the illustrations in Birds of America. Sidelights The British have been experi menting secretly with some planes that are reported to do 1,200 miles an hour. . . . You read "Gone With the Wind," of course. How long did it take you? C. S. Forester claims he read it in a day and a half, with time out for meals, sleeping, dressing, etc. The Royal Rosarians of Port land, Ore., is an organization of 200 businessmen who are rose growing enthusiasts. Incidental ly, it has been claimed that Port land, Ore., supplies most of the roses for the Pasadena. Cal., an nual Tournament of Roses pat rade. Please Note Do you believe dogs are good judges of the characters of peo ple? Our dog has failed to warm up to some people whom we thought were all right and later turned out to be the opposite. I am inclined to believe some dogs are psychic. If somebody is thinking of doing a dog's master wrong the dog is likely to re alize it before the master. James Gordon Bennett, the great news paper publisher of yester-year, went the limit in relying upon his Pekingese dogs as character readers. If one of the Pekinese showed evidence of not liking one of Bennett's employees he was usually fired. If, on the other hand, one of the dogs warmed up to an employee Ben-: nett either gave him a raise in 1 salary or a more important po sition. Asking Queries from clients. Q. You recently mentioned Bessie Love, a star of the silent film days. Do you know where Bessie is now? j A. Last I heard of Miss Love was that she was starring in a stage froduction of Tennessee Wil- j jams' play, "The Glass Menag erie," in Dublin, Ireland. Q. Friend of mine says Geraldine ( Farrar was the first to play the title role in "Madame Butterfly.'' I say it was Emmy Destin. Also that Emmy weighed nearly 200 pounds at the time. A. "Madame ; Butterfly" was first produced in Italy. Don't know who played title role there. But Emmy Des tinn and Caruso were the stars of the production of "Madame Butterfly" that first attracted world-wide attention to the op era.
