Sfage Career
to America
she enrolled in April, 1948, In
day,
the TaKarazuKa gins opera
school.
The Takarazuka girls school Is
unique. It trains its students to
sing, dance and act and operates
an operetta. Its repertoire In
cludes Japanese and Shakespear
ean dramas and a large number
of others featuring "make be
lieve" kingdoms almost all
based on romance between a
beautiful princess and a prince
charming.
Girls Portray Malts
The male parts are portrayed
by girls. The foreigner finds It
difficult to understand, but Jap
anese girl 'teen-agers are almost
fanatic in their admiration of
members of the Takarazuka
show.
Entrance requirements to this
school are strict but Miss Mat
suda made the grade and she
made her debut in April, 1947,
under the stage name of Midori
Wakasa.
She attracted considerable at
tention last year when in flaw
less English she described the
costumes in a fashion design
show on a Tokyo stage. Ameri
can occupation troops wondered
who the girl in the Takarazuka
uniform was who spoke their
language so well.
Teaches English
In between plays, she has
been teaching English to other
members of the cast.
Miss Matsuda now is continu
ing her study of vocal music in
preparation for what she hopes
will be a stage career in Amer
ica. She plans to leave Japan
some time "before the end of the
year" to live in Washington,
D. C, with her sister, Rose. Their
mother died two years ago.
