EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE rrldar. April 21, I9S0 On the Side-6" V. Dulling (DMrifcM4 k Klaf reshiras SradletM, taeJ r Tm nmihhiimiiiihwmiimiiiii Sunshine hat been plentiful in the Sunshine state the past few days so I have acquired a bit of a sun tan. We are shoving off for New York shortly and I am hoping the spell of "unusual weather" in that sector will have ceased upon our arrival. I have had enough "unusual weather this year to last me for some time, it Js very pieasanv i" Ma nnw hut it certainly was a bitter blow to me when we first came here to see people wanner trie around wearing overcoats. And having to sit close to a gas heater at mgnt time. Pleas Note luntivoi nf Florida rarely run for political office. Most of the government positions are new men who have come here from other states. Those with ability p nratnrn have a distinct edge in running for office in the Sun- shine state. In tne past iuu yeara ninp natives of Florida have been elected to the office of gov ernor. The Sunsnine state even had one governor, David Sholtz, who was a native of Brooklyn. Polo Ponies Many thoroughbreds enjoy racing, but none enjoy that as much as polo ponies do a polo match. Laddie oaniora nas a olo pony that is 17 years 01 age. this noble animal today. He is very lively. However, if kept from playing polo he broods and won t eat. Rockefeller's Poem John D. Rockefeller was very fond of poetry, but during his long life he wrote only one poem. He had this poem printed on cards which he gave to peo nl in whom he handed those fa mous shiny new dimes. This is the poem: I was early taught to work as well as play. My life has bHa one long happy holiday Full of work and full of play. I dropped the worry oa the way And Cod was good to m very day. 'i Indian Names Which state has the most cities and towns with Indian names? Ij believe it must be either Wash ington or Maine. Florida still has many towns bearing Indian names, but in many cases these names have been discarded as too hard to pronounce and spell. As for example take the town of Ickepuckessa, the name of which was changed to Plant City. Lemons What Is the extent of your in formation on lemons? Are you 1 familiar with the Perrine lemon? This is named in honor of Dr. Henry E. Perrine. About 100 years ago Dr. Perrine brought some limes from Yucatan, Mex ico, and transplanted them on the Florida Keys. He then crossed the Key lime with a lemon and produced the fruit that bears his name. CattU It was my belief the importa tion of brahma bulls in Florida to improve the breed of cattle was a recent development. I now learn that one E. E. Goodno, pre viously a cattleman in Kansas, started the importation of brah ma bulls in Florida in 1867. These bulls are immune from tick fever. They sweat so much they drown the ticks. We were warned our dog would pick up ticks and fleas down here, but so far he has been bothered by neither. He is in the pink and full of pep. Thought 11 years old he can turn on terrific speed when pursuing a squirrel. A re markable animal. Briefly At Homossassa Springs, on highway 41 to Tampa, that erst while great Brooklyn Dodger pitcher, Dazzy Vance, once con ducted a hunting lodge. I think next to Joe McGinnlty and Nap Rucker that Vance was Brook lyn's greatest pitcher of all time. . . . That pink Florida grapefruit is really something. However, it is hard to get in Florida because most of it is shipped to other states. Boom Towns Among the Florida boom towns of the 1924-1926 period was one named Venice. This town was developed by the Brotherhood of Locomotive En gineers. It was a planned city to be surrounded Dy tarms owned by retired locomotive engineers. Corporations organized by the brotherhood spent 514 million developing this place, but it col lapsed in 1926 with many other dream cities of f londa. Asides In 1918 Sidney J. Catts ran for governor of Florida on the prohibition ticket and scored quite an upset when he won the election. Shady Cove -Trail Shady Cove-Trail.
