Accompanied by bril liant lightning displays, the tornadoes Injured at least 14 and piled up a $260,000 damage bill. Previously Advanced Washington, Apr. 26 U.R Previously secret details on ad vanced weapons for defense against air and ground attack were disclosed today. The weapons include: Two air force fighter planes, the Republic YF-96A and the Lockheed -, not yet oniciany announced. Army anti-aircraft rockets and guided missiles said to be able to destroy bombers flying above 60.000 feet. A potent anti-tank weapon. ReTMltd in Interview Gen. J. Lawton Collins, army chief of staff, guardedly revealed development of the new anti aircraft and anti-tank weapons last night in a radio interview with Lylo C. Wilson. United Press Washington manager. The interview was carried nationally on the American Broadcasting company network. Collins said relatively Inex pensive anti-aircraft rockets are In the advanced stages of de velopment." He was confident they will be able to destroy planes flying at altitudes of more than 11 miles. The army has a guided mis sile, he said, that "Rives prom ise" of knocking out planes at an even greater range. The anti-tank weapon, he said, may "change the whole concept of tank warfare." Nothing that "potential aggressor armies" have large numbers of tanks, he said the army is "well on the way toward producing" the weapon to stop them. To Tnt Large Rocket The navy announced meantime that its guided missile ship, the "Norton Sound," sails from Port Huenemc, Cal., today for a 29 day Pacific cruise during which a "Viking" rocket will be launched sometime next month. The Viking is the largest U. S. built research rocket. Almost 80 feet long and 2V4 feet in diam eter, it attained an altitude of M'i miles in experiments at the White Sands, N. M., proving grounds a year ago. Next month's test will be the first in which the Viking has been launched from a ship. It was disclosed that the new YF-96A air force fighter, still experimental, Is a swept-bnek wing version of the F-B4 Thun derjet. The F-97 is a fast-climbing two-seat, all-weather fighter. Based on the F-80 Shooting Star, the nation's first operational jet tighter, it boasts a high-speed, thin wing and a Prntt and Whit ney J-48 enRine. the most pow erful In production in this coun try. TO ATTEND SESSION Camp White. Apr. 26 A large delegation of Camp White mem bers expect to attend the past commanders' night in the Mod ford armory today. Two weeks aRo the Mcdford post conducted an open moeling here and ex tended an invitation to the men. Secret Details On Defense Weapons Told 108 Planes Ordered Collins said in his interview with Wilson that modern aero nautical developments have giv en the army a tough problem in devising defenses against planes that "may be used to attack the United Stales." He was "confident" that new anti-aircraft rockets "will be able to destroy" planes at alti tudes that are at least two miles higher than any bomber flies today. He gave no further details, but it was considered fair specula- lion that the rockets may have proximity fuses small radio sets that set off their explosive charge when they reach attack ing planes. Collins gave no details at all on the "radical" anti-tank weap on. But some quarters speculated that the army may have com bined the recoilless gun with the shaped charge. A shaped charge, used in bazookas of World War II fame, is a concen trated explosive that will blast a hole through almost anything, when set off at the right time. Institute of Folk Dance Set at SOC During Week-End Ashland. Apr. 26 A folk dance Institute will be conduct ed at Southern Oregon college on Friday and Saturday this week, it was announced today by Miss Violet Stockham. dance instructor at the school. Henry "Buzz" Glass, Oakland. Cal.. founder and first president of the Folk Dance Federation of California, will attend the event and will give instruction in some of the easier round dances and mixers, such as the "Pally Cake polka," "Astoria schottische." the Swedish "hambo,' and others. , Glass has conducted similar institutes in the bay area of California and in Portland. He has also taught extension classes at Stanford university. Univer sity of California and Mills col lege in Oakland. Miss Stockham said he Is one of the most enthu siastic and best-known leaders In the California dance movement. and is a former editor of the "Let's Dance" magazine. . The first session of the Insti tute will be at 8 p. m. Friday in the SOC Memorial Court gym nasium. Saturday sessions will be at 9 a. m 1:30 p. m. and 8 p. m. Material presented at each session will be different. Those interested in learning the dances are Invited to partici pate. LIBRARIAN LEAVES Camp Yhite, Apr. 26 Miss Helen Webster, center librarian, will combine business with pleas ure when she leaves today for Sacramento. Cal., on annual leave. In her absence affnlrs of the library will bo conducted by two members, Kd Sieveiis and Donald Henley. Miss Webster ex pects to be gone for two weeks. CALVERT DISTILLERS CORPORATION, NEW YORK CITY 'On to Eugene' Concert Given, Still Need Funds A near-capacity audience last night attended the "On to Eu gene" concert of Medford high school musjc students, given at the school auditorium to raise funds for the young musicians' trip to the state music contest in Eugene next month. Participating in the varied program were the choir, girls' chorus, boys' octet and girls' sex tet, as well as the orchestra and band. Now Have $650 I. A. Mirick, supervisor of in strumental music in the Med ford schools, spoke briefly near the end of the program, explain ing that with previous donations and money raised by the con cert, music students have about $650 out of $1,000 needed to make the trip. "We still hope that some 'Santa Claus' will see that these students get to make the trip," Mirick said, "and any contribu tions will be accepted with gratitude." The city school superintend ent's office explained today that expenses for trips of this type are not budgeted from regular educational expenditures, but that the district docs help out in expenses within budgetary limits. The district assisted on the recent trip to the Grants Pass regional contest, and will help as much as possible on the Eu gene trip, including payment of registration fees. These plans were announced at a meeting of the festival as sociation here this week, and Gene Malccki, Salem publicity man who is working for the festi val this year, said that it is be lieved that if an authority such as Sir Edmund will attend the event, many other students and actors will be attracted. Committees Namad Committee assignments were announced by President John Cotton at the meeting this week, including groups which will handle housing, a parade, ban quet, decorations, visitation, sou venirs, reception, queen and Elizabethan fair. Work will begin immediately on preparation of banners and flags to be Dlaced on the streets and the theater building. Cot-' tdh stated that women who are interested in assisting this work may get in touch with Bill Mc Gee at the Ashland Chamber of Commerce.
