M.D. Readers should address Inquiries tot Dr. William Brady, 265 El Camlne, 8everly rflllt, Calif. INSIDE DOPE ON A very determined ladv sat at the doctor's desk, and in response to his question as to what he could do for her, thrust out her arm and comman d e d, "Take m v y wl , blood pres- . - :jJ l sure." The doc tor, hesitated then said: "If the informa tion would be of real value to you I'd do it. But, first, tell me what is ot. drady bothering you." To cut it short the lady swept out of the office abruptly. The professor from the liberal arts college ignored a reception ist, several clerks, interns and nurses and walking into the uni versity hospital laboratory de manded of any and all within hearing distance that he be given a "cholesterol test." The pathol ogist looked up from his micro scope and recognizing the pro fessor said, patiently, "If you need attention, please report to the receptionist. She will explain the routine to you. I'll cut this short, too. The pro fessor charged out asserting that someone would hear about all this fol-de-rol. In both instances, the visitors, whether they realized it or not, were attempting to be their own doctors. When the heart contracts, the blood pressure is momentarily higher than when the heart is resting or filling. The blood pressure "reading" thus involves two figures: That concerned with the pressure registered at the peak of the heart's contraction and that concerned with the low er pressure recorded while the heart is resting. The average per son who wants to know what his blood pressure is, would be con fused if the doctor mentioned both figures. Inevitably there would follow a raft of questions all of which, however, interesting to the pa tient, would have no direct bear ing upon a plan of procedure against his illness. The relation of one figure to the other and the significance of either figure would be matters about which the palient could form no opin ion. Why then should the patient bother about it? If a person suspects that his 'blood pressure" is giving him trouble, the intelligent thing for him to do is to go to a doctor and state his complaint. He wastes the doctor's time and his own by suggesting his reasons for thinking "it might be his blood pressure." The word that his blood pres sure is "average" or "low," should be sufficient to satisfy a patient. If he is told it is "high," that in Itself should be sufficient without demanding to know the figures involved information the patient could not understand anyway. A patient who has "high blood pressure" is not treated for high blood pressure but for the disease which is causing it. High blood pressure is not a di sease in itself. Rather it is an effect of underlying disease. Outside of spending his money, a patient who, on his own, fre quently cajoles a doctor into "taking his blood pressure," ac complishes nothing. He just has a notion a very fuzzy one. BLOOD PRESSURE person who attempts to forecast his future or his capabilities by reference to a set of blood pressure figures is taking him self for a ride. If your blood pressure con cerns you or if you think it does go to a doctor and merely lell him in what way you do not feel well. Or, if you feel all right, merely request a routine general examination. Don't go to a doc tor with a pre-conceived notion and expect him to fall right in with your suggestions. You will get along much better if you don't. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Callus Please mail me your preacriptlon for removing callusea. (H. D.)
