April U. 1150 Oakland Acorns Hammer Two Wins from Portland; 6 to 5, 10 to 1 SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE WALLICK TO GRAPPLE Leo Wallick, above, the Chicago pile driving expert, will lock grips with Lee Grable in a return match headlining the armory wrestling card Thursday night. Grable seeks revenge for being subdued by a pile driver while both were out of the ring last weeK. MacK wiiara, promoter, ex pects to have the card completed by tomorrow. Dr. Stanley Handicap Golf Champ Dr. Bruce Stanley is the new men's spring golf handicap champion at Rogue Valley Coun try club. He wound up the 36-hole week-end finals with an 8 and 7 triumph over Max Peirce. Stanley went into the windup 18 holes yesterday with a five- up lead and the match ended on the 29th hole where the victory was three under par to that point of the round. The two played out the full Sunday 18 with Stanley scoring an even par 71 and Peirce an 81. For the Saturday 18 Stanley had a 75 mark and Peirce an 85. A feature of Stanley's first 18 was his 32-stroke second nine. Stanley had a three stroke han dicap for the match. To the new champ goes the Frank and John Perl trophy. To get to the finals Stanley beat Morris Leonard o ana , uom Provost Sr.. 4 and 3. Norm Worthley 1 up and Bayard Get- chell 2 and 1. Dain Clay Bought By Beaver Club; Vince Shupe Sold (Jflklnnd, Cal., Apr. 24 U.R1 General Manager Bill Mulligan of the Portland Beavers an nounced the purchase of Dain Clay, right-handed slugger, and the sale of Vince Shupe here Sunday. Clay was purchased outright from the San Diego Padres. A former Cincinnati Red. he hit .249 in 165 games with the Pads last season. Shupe went to the Oklahoma City Indians of the Texas league. He came to Portland last season and took over the first base spot. This season Shupe ployed second-fiddle to Mickey Rocco ana server as reserve outfielder. Minneapolis Lakers Basketball Champions Minneapolis, Apr. 24 (U.R) The mighty Minneapolis Lakers were fresh out of worlds to con quer today with their third different league in the last three years. As gigantic George Mikan carved himself a deeper niche in basketball immortality by hooping 40 points, the Lakers captured the National Basketball association title last night by de feating Syracuse, 110 to 95, thus taking the final series, four games to two. Phoenix Seeks Win Over Jacksonville Phoenix, Apr. 24 Phoenix high, set back in its county "B" loop title defense during the week-end, will be out to get back on the win side of the led ger Friday when it travels to Jacksonville. The Pirates fell 9 to 6 before Talent Friday. Phoenix outhit the Bulldogs eight to six but six errors hurt. Phoenix now has three wins and one loss in the league. Apr. 24-4U.R) The National Boxing associa tion, issuing stern orders to all its champions, turned to ailing Heavyweight King Ezzard Charles today and told him to re port for a physical examination. The N. B. A. 's executive com mittee said it wanted to find out whether the Negro battler from Cincinnati was well enough to defend his crown. "Conflicting reports" about him have reached the 20-man committee since Charles twice postponed title fights against Freddie Beshore. Col. Heinle Miller, executive secretary of the N. B. A., said the examination would take place 'very soon and would prob ably" be performed by an offi cial of the Pennsylvania boxing commission. The committee also warned Charles and all other champions to stop selecting "mediocre oppo sition for title bouts" and give logical contenders a shot at their crowns. Both had pitched shutouts in the first week of the Western International league 1950 cam paign. Balances Books For Wyatt, the five-hit 1-0 ef- SOC Defeats Central Point Central Point, Apr. 24 A six run splurge in the fourth inning gave Southern Oregon college all the runs necessary to whip the Central Point Studs semi pro baseball nine here yesterday. The Raiders went on to win 9 to 5. Three hits, three Stud errors and two walks helped the Raider rally. Central Point had a 2 to 0 margin going into the fourth stanza. Both scores came in the opening inning on a walk, hit, error and fielder's option. Central Point added a run in the fifth and Southern Oregon one in the seventh. In the eighth the Raiders got two more coun ters when Snuffy Smith horn ered after John Gray singled. Smith's rap over left field was one of few out-of-the-park round trippers on record at the Cen tral Point field. The Studs got two runs in the ninth frame. Alex McDonald walked and Frank Roelandt's swat was deep enough for a single although misplaycd. Both scored on the error. Ga., Apr. 24 (U.R) Funeral services for Bill Alex ander, who guided Georgia Tech to football glory through 25 sea sons, were scheduled today for 11 o'clock tomorrow morning. Alexander. Hu, was found dead in bed yesterday morning by his wife. Death presumably was due to the heart ailment which had hampered his activities for sev eral years. Salt Lake Defeats Redding Browns, 12-8 Redding, Cal., Apr. 24 U.R) The Salt Lake City Bees of the Pioneer league defeated the Red ding Browns of the Far West league, 12 to 8, in an exhibition baseball game yesterday. The Browns won the series, two games to one. Redding Manager Ray Perry homered with two on in the sixth. Rogues Bow To Klamath In Practice Wildness on the part of Med ford pitchers outdid similar troubles for Klamath Falls hurl ers and the Gems won a 13 to 9 victory over the Rogues in a non-league game at Lodi, Cal., yesterday afternoon. Texas Linksman Wins Cavalier Golf Tournament Virginia Beach, Va., Apr. 24 (U.R) The $1,100 check young Fred Hawkins of El Paso, Tex., received today for winning the $10,000 Cavalier specialists golf tournament had a double signi ficance! It was the most money he ever received for a single match and it represented his first major golf triumph. The husky Hawkins, who start ed playing professionally in 1947, fashioned a fancy 200 total over 54 holes to beat Veteran Clayton Heafner of Charlotte, N.C., by two strokes. Jimmy Demaret, the favorite and co-holder of the lead going into the final round, suddenly fell apart, carded a four-over par 73 as compared with Hawkins' 69, and wound up in fifth place with 204. Hcafner's second place finish was worth S!50 while Johnny Palmer of Badin, N.C.. and Ted Kroll of Philmont, Pa., each earned S825 when they tied for third place with 203 apiece.
