Apr. 19 Phoenix high posted its third victory against no defeats In county class B conference baseball com octltlon when it topped Rogue River 6 to 3 at the Rogue River field yesterday afternoon. Hut ton on the mound for Phoenix allowed five hits. The defending champions from Phoenix tallied four runs and enough to win the game in the first Inning on four hits and an error. H. Hal In way rapped out a triple and Thompson a double tor extra base blows by the winners. Sowlei Fans Ten Sowles on the mound for Rogue River struck out 10 while Hulton fanned eight. Glen Dcnuy for the Chieftains slammed out a home run with no one on base and Prefontaine of the same nine lined out double. Phoenix batted out eisht hits of the slants of Sowles and com mitted two errors. Rogue River made but five hits off Hutton and was credited with three mis-plays. Hay ward Due On Week-end At U. of 0. Eugene, Ore., Apr. 19 W.R) At least 62 high school will be entered in the 13th annual hay ward track and field relays at University of Oregon this week end. Ray Hendrickson, meet direc tor, said entry blanks had been returned by 62 high schools, in cluding four out-of-state schools. He estimated that 1,100 prep trackmen would be entered in the relays Friday and Saturday. Class B and C schools will compete Friday with class A schools competing Saturday morning. (James will Be played at 4:15 p.m. First games May 8 will send Roosevelt to Washington and Lincoln to Jackson, followed on May 11 when Roosevelt plays host to Lincoln and Washington goes to Jackson school. Washington will be host to Lincoln on May 15 when Jack son is the guest of Roosevelt, Washington will go to Roosevelt and Lincoln will be host to Jack son on Mav 18, and May 22 sends Jackson to Washington and Hooseveit to Lincoln. The final day of the baseball schedule May 25 puts Washing ton at Lincoln and Roosevelt at Jackson. Name Leicht Grid Mentor The Dalles, Ore., Apr. 19 (U.R) Jake Leicht, former University of Oregon football star, has ac cepted the head coaching job at The Dalles high scnool, superin tendent of Schools Dave Bates announced today. The Stockton, Cat., athlete. who has spent the last two grid seasons with the Baltimore Colts of the Eastern Professional Foot ball league, is expected to re port here next August. Leicht was a Webtoot half back in 1U46, '47 and '48 and gained all-coast honors. He also was a standout in baseball and track. Carl Stager, Dalles football coach for the past two seasons, has resigned. BOWLING LADIES' LEAGUE Audrey Swoape took high in dividual series with a 521 pin fall and high individual game as she rolled a 214 when the Ladies' Bowling league rolled last night at the Medford Bowl ing lanes. The Eagles coached by "Shy Callaghan put on a seven run second inning and a four run fourth frame to wrap up the vic tory. Central Point scored two runs each in the first and sev enth. Five hits, three Pointers errors and a walk provided those seven bugles tallies. Dick Chamberlain on the mound for Eagle Point allowed four hits and except for the first inning when two unearned runs were scored by Central Point, he never was In trouble until the seventh. Even then he was able to bear down although visibly tired, for a victory. Pat Simmons with two hits in four trips, Catternach who got two for three and a double by Bradshaw were big sticks for the Eagles. Colley rapped out two for two and walked his third time at bat for the Pointers coached by Clarence Mellbye. Toles Winner In Portland Portland. Ore., Apr. 19 (U.R) Heavyweight Bill Petersen of Chicago last night got a rude set back to his hopes of winning back the northwest heavyweight boxing title from Joe Kahut as 195-pound Roscoe Toles of De troit won a unanimous, 10-round decision from his 207-pound op ponent. Petersen vowed last month he would fight in the northwest un til he had regained his north west title from Kahut. Instead, he lost last night's match and immediate championship hopes to Toles' two-fisted, sustained head attack throughout the fight. There were no knockdowns. The United Press scorecard gave seven rounds to Toles, two to Petersen and one even. In the 10-round semi-final Frisco Baracao, 134, Honolulu, knocked out Ernie Pacheco, 134, Oakland, Cal., early in the first round. Pistol Handicap Award Cliff Friend won the pistol handicap gold trophy last night in the weekly pistol shoot of the Medford Rifle club and became the second member to do -so since the shoot was started. The competition last night attracted 21 to the indoor range at Mer rick's. In the regular shoot, Paul Shelton was high with 277, Clin ton Charley had 272, Orville Lengele 257, Stan Smith 252 and Friend 252. Last January Smith won the first handicap trophy. Joe Chez Leads C.I.B.A. Joe Chez, former Medford high outstanding athlete and now a sophomore at Stanford university, is leading the Cali fornia Intercollegiate Baseball association pitching race and ranks among the first 20 in the batting records. The local boy has won three and lost none in C1BA games so far. striking out 15 opponents, walking 10 and having an earned run average of five. In the hit ting department Cher is hitting a .273 with three hits in 11 trips to the plate and has scored one run. Apr. 19 (U.R) State Game Director Charles Lockwood today said that 4,200 pheasants, mostly hens, had been released in eastern Oregon.
