The newspaper said the Invad ers were hacked by natjonalist ground troops while nationalist planes and warships cut off their communications with the mainland after the invasion was launched yesterday. It said also that Defense Com mander Gen. Hsueh Yuen had served an ultimatum on the re maining 1,100 communists to surrender by tonight or face a bloody aerial attack. Wild re joicing on the island followed the nationalist victory, the re port said. Pear Bureau Honored For Advertising Work New York, Apr. 19 The Oregon-Washington-California Pear bureau, with headquarters In Portland, was singled out for high honors in national advertis ing here today by the Associated Business Publications. The bureau received an award for the excellence shown In one of its 1949 advertising cam paigns, and competed with 300 other organizations for honors in a nation-wide contest sponsored by the ABP. Chancellor of the exchequer Sir Stafford Cripps told com mons that the nation still can not afford any considerable re ductions in taxation. He proposed a 1950-51 budget of $9,674,000,000, an increase of $224,000,000 over 1949-50. The largest item of extra cost was for the national health service, Britain's version of socialized medicine. ..... The United States budget for 1950-51 is $43 billion. All the attractive suggestions but forward for remissions of taxation must be put firmly on one side," Cripps said. "We have not yet reached the state of af fairs when considerable reduc tions are advisable."
