CI FOURTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tutiday. April It. 1950 a Army Wile in Japan Writes Mother in Medlord; Tells Various Experiences r,nrrmantm on Ua VkletitrV ill. dustry and food of Japan are contained in leiiers wpiui w have received from their daugh ter, Mrs. n. J. aion, wnose nus band is an army lieutenant sta tinnpH in Janan. In a recent letter, Mrs. Stoll wrote of a trip which she ana Stoll wrote that Kyota is the cultural center ox oupan, wm former capital. The palace is re i i i tua imnarni' use. she wrote, and on the grounds are tea houses, oeauiuui lanes w.m arches and many bamboo trees. There are reception houses for low, middle and high class Jap anese who come to visit the em peror. m Waits "All these beautiful grounds are kept up by quae a sum, she wrote, "and to me it seems such a waste when I see how crowded the people live. Kyota has a population of one million and is the third largest city in Japan; just think, that is the population 01 me wnuie aioic - t on raav understand their need for expansion, or else .... .1 r 1 birtn coniroi. 1 ounj them, and can reany appreciate .11 M klttocinifs T think the American people as a population don t Know wnen mey ic off." Mrs. Stoll also wrote of visit ing factories, gift shops and shrines, and mentioned that there are some 1,500 shrines of one sort or another in the Kyota district. "You see very young and very old people working in these factories, each with his little teapot on a hot plate be side him." Sees Parad In another letter Mrs. Stoll wrote of watching a large parade in Tokyo. "It was held on the palace grounds and we saw close to 15,000 troops pass in review, plus airplanes from the carrier 'Boxer'." she wrote. The parade was in honor of the chiefs of staff of army, navy, and airforce, and they were on the reviewing stand. General MacArthur was not present. They say he seldom goes to these parades. Guess he is getting too 01a. "The embassies of practically every country were represented, and we could watch them all drive 11 n in their foreign cars Quite Impressive, but I was glad 1 was just a spectator." She wrote that on "Manila Dav." a holiday, the Stolls and another couple visited the Fujia hotel, some 50 miles from TOKyo, Take Off Shoes Another time Mrs. Stoll wrote of visiting the Eastern club, in Yokohama, writing that this is a Japanese house converted into the American version of a cafe except that the food is served Japanese style. "We had to take our shoes off before entering, and we had skiacki which was cooked on the hibachi in the iddle of a very low table, at which we sat. 'We also ate with chop sticks. and that is an art at which I am not very adept. Skiacki is sort of like a stew. They use either beef or pork cut into very thin, small steaks. They start that cooking in a soy sauce, then add cut up onions, carrots, cabbage, turnips, skirataki (like spaghetti except transparent.) It was very good and we enjoyed it They use so few dishes and cooking utensils that I wonder if our maids don't think we are crazy to use so many dishes and silver. "Skoshl wants me to order some shoes and a purse out of our Sears catalog, so I have to figure out how many yen she will will need. It takes 360 yen to make a dollar." Farmers Urged to Vaccinate Pigs Against Cholera Washington. Apr. 18 U.PJ Farmers were urged today to vaccinate their young pigs aguinsi cuoicra mis year, al though apparently the vaccina tion killed some hogs last year. The agriculture department assured farmers that all investi gation indicates that all current stocks of anti-hog cholera serum are free of the "variant virus" which assured some losses among treated hogs in the midwest last year. Greater Loss Danger There will be danger of "far greater losses" this year, the de partment said, if farmers "take a chance" and do not vaccinate at all. "Early and increased doses of anti-hog-cholera serum is the surest means of protecting against widespread appearance of this disease this year, said. The deaths of vaccinated hogs last year were attributed largely to a "variant virus" contained in the virus-serum used for vaccina tions. The serum did not protect the hogs against the variant form of the virus. It is unlikely that the variant will appear again for some time, the department said. As added insurance against losses, the bureau of animal in dustry suggested that farmers vaccinate pigs before they are weaned, and give them more than the standard dose of serum.
