LOTS OF ATOMIC JOBS Richland, Wash. U.PJ The General Electric company fore casts a peak summer employ, ment of 72,000 persons at the Hanford atomic plant this year. But don't set me wrong I am not criticizing the Florida climate. I just want the clients of this column to be rightly in formed about the April weather in the Sunshine state, jweryDoay who has the opportunity should visit Florida as it is an extreme ly interesting and pleasant part of the country. However, i aon i want anv of our subscribers to be influenced by what "Where the Summer Spends the Winter" slo gan as to come down nere in me winter or early spring wan nom ine but an August wardrobe During April in Florida you are going to have many aays wnen u is warm enough to take a dip in the briny or a sun bath on the front lawn. On the other hand there will be days when warm clothes will be necessary. As for the niahts. there are many chilly ones. As I pointed out re cently, all tne flog iracus wnere night racing is conducted adver tise "heated grandstands." That Mem to nrove the point. Inc dentally, during a recent broad cast of the Gulfstream park races from the track the an nnuncer said: "The rain is com ing down in torrents, the track is a sea of mud, it's chilly. It's more like California here today than Florida." A nasty cracK what? Horiei k Women In a number of recent divorce eases I have noticed the husband has included in his grounds that his wife cannot cook and is not an efficent housewife. I have also noticed that this complaint strikes a very sympathetic note with the judge. It seems to give the husband quite an edge. This brings to mind that wuerjec. Can., has over 100 schools of housekeeping. The course in these schools is of four years du ration. When a young woman graduates from Quebec school of housekeeping she really knows her stuff as to cooking, home management, infant rear ing, needlework, budget han dling, etc. She has also been ad- vised as to the "peculiarities of the male sex and is Instructed in the handling of men. Auld Lang Syne Remember Elmer "Ollie" Oil chant, the great Purdue and West Point football star of All : American caliber? "Ollie" has been one of my regular readers for a long time. He dropped me : a sympathetic note to say "Sorry : you have shingles. I know just how you feel. I had them last fall. But don't worry, Eddie, they will pass away. You have to give them time." Do you know what the top specialist in New York on this ailment told me just be fore I left for Florida? He said frankly: "There are a number of special treatments alleged to shorten the period of suffering irom shingles out if 1 were you I would do nothing. Just take it easy and let nature do the rest." I am just mentioning this for the benefit of a number of readers who have informed me they have shingles too. This specialist also told me that in the early stages the best success has been achieved with radio-therapy. Pleas Note Florida has developed Into quite a cattle country. It is one of the largest producers of beef in the United States. Speaking of Florida activities, I was always interested in that which my good friend the late Rex Beach en gaged in as a sideline to his writ ing activities. Rex grew Easter lilies on his place at Sanford, Fla. He always had a good mar ket for his product and his enter prise was an extremely profita ble one. Think this over if you are thinking of settling on a farm in r londa. Asking Queries from clients. Q. What became of shirts with detachable collars? I figure the upkeep was less on them than the attached collar type. A. I believe the shirts you mention are still avail able. It is true the first part of a shirt to wear out is the collar, Way I handle that situation is to have shirts made to order. Then when a collar wears out I don't discard the entire shirt. I just have the shirtmaker make a new collar. I don't beileve In the long run that made to order shirts are any harder on the pocketbook than the ready-made ones. Over There Had a letter from Homer Croy, the novelist from Florence, Italy. Next to aPris that is my favorite European city. Or was before the war. Don t know now it is now. Homer said he went to visit tne birthplace of Leonardo Da Vinci I missed that but I did have din ner with some friends in Flor ence who lived in a house that was once the home of Machea- vclli. Sidelights Certainly a number of very tall girls are making good these days. I see a Miami night club features Kay Starr, described as six feet tow inches tall red head." . . . "Look Younger, Live Longer, is the provocative title of a new book by Dr. Gayelord Hauser. It was Doctor Hauser who once said to keep a woman looking young and in good health she should be "trained ike a racehorse." Is there a place near your house where you could work your wife out six furlongs at five in the morning? alent Talent, Apr. 14 Crater Lake Campfire girls met April 12.
