Your Health and Its Care If DR. WILLIAM I FOOT, M.D. deaden should address Inquiries rat Or. William Ireery, 241 II Camlne, levarly Hills. Calif. ANOXIA AND Between attacks, or after the victim has ceased to care about it, there is nothing elicited by e x a m 1 nation which s h o ws that the indi vidual had asthma, epi lepsy or angina pectoris. True enough the pa' tient subject to angina pectoris generally pre sents signs of arteriosclerosis but as every one knows, Uw. Brady most persons w i t n arterio sclerosis never have angina pec toris. Among the theories conceived by physicians to account for tne attack of angina Dectoris prob ably the one at present most favored is that the distress and pain are due to anoxia, oxygen shortage in the heart muscle. Anoxia might be easier to un derstand if we called it asphyxia. It is in fact the serious or fatal feature of carbon monoxide gas sing. A person overcome by breathing air that contains much as three to five parts of tasteless, colorless, odorless car bon monoxide in a thousand suffers not from poisoning but from asphyxia or anoxia. You see, carbon monoxide has a stronger affinity for hemoglobin than oxygen has, so it unites with the hemoglobin (the red coloring matter which carries oxygen to the cells and tissues and organs and takes back to the lunes a load of carbon diox ide to be blown off) and thus crowding out oxygen and pro ducing asphyxia or anoxia. In angina pectoris (heart pang) the anoxia or oxygen deficit in the hard working heart muscle is generally the consequence of spasdmodic contraction or con' striction of a branch of or per- haDs the main coronary artery The heart muscle, that is. the bundle of muscle fibres making up the main part of the heart wall, receives its oxygen through arteries, one right, one left ar- terv. which branch directly from the great artery (aorta) just be yond the aortic valve, ihese ar. teries are called coronary or coronal because they have the appearance of a crown on the heart. Inhalations of oxygen from tank have been given consider able relief in cases of angina pectoris and such treatment has saved lite in acute coronary thrombosis. Oxygen inhalations bring the oxygen richness oi tne Diood up to or above normal, but still the amount of this oxygen delivered to the heart muscle depends upon the freedom of blood flow through the coronary arteries or their Drenches. Nitroglycerin (now called gly ceryl trinitrate), amyl nitrite (li quid inhaled by crushing a cap sule or ampule in handkerchief in the hand), sodium nitnate (a salt taken internally, with slow er and more prolonged action than the first two nitrites), and other nitrites, are the remedies usually employed to relax spas modic contraction of constriction of the coronary arteries and so permit a freer delivery oi oxy gen to the heart muscle. Other factors which tend to re- church with a musical program. The Rev. Frost brought the mes sage. Mr. Campbell conducted a baptismal service for James uu breath and Richard Wallace. Fol lowing the services a nice din ner was served and the younger group enjoyed an Easter egg hunt. EXPERT . . .
