TEN MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Local Pros Get Players Several articles of news that may interest local baseball fans were reported by United Press and 'The Sporting News" con cerning pro ball players either coming to Medford or who have been here in recent seasons. Manager Ad Liska of the Salem Senators in the class B Western International league dis closed yesterday that Outfielder Claud Buckley had been sent on option to the Medford Rogues of the rar west uaseDau league, TJ. P. reported. According to the Sporting News Outfielder Mel Thomas had been assigned by Seattle to the Rogues. Mobile. Ala., a class AA league team, also has announced that Don Taylor, an outfielder, has been sent by that ciuo 10 vera Beach, Fla., for assignment. It was believed here that Taylor is the same youth who piayoa in Medford two years ago. Both teams are in the Valley Baseball league but the Sabbath game will not count In that league season. The Rogues oulhit the collegians 13 to S. Santa Maria Cal. Apr. 14 (Special to Mail Tribune) Man ager Tommy Nelson of the Med ford Rogues today repeated his praise of the Far West league team's infield with Shortstop Russ Stuart and Third Baseman Al Bolen looking particularly impressive so far. "Dutch" Reuther, scout for the New York Giants with whom the Rogues have a working agree ment, has termed Bolen as the best prospect in the combined Idaho Falls-Medford training camD. The Rogues are scneauied to play Visalia of the California league Saturday and Sunday in a pair of "after dark" practice games at Visalia. Medford will iourney to Santa Barbara Mon day to meet the state college Cauchos. The Gauchos go to Santa Maria to battle the Rogues next week Tuesday. Manager nelson singled in Medford's only run in the prac tice game with Cal Poly earlier this week, which Medford lost 6 to 1. Frank Zazula Selected Coach at N. Dakota U. Grand Forks. N. D.. Apr. 14 (U.R) Frank Zazula, former Uni versity of Oregon backfield coach, yesterday was named head football coach for the Uni versity of North Dakota. zazula succeeds dick Miner, also from Oregon, who resigned last week to take over football coaching duties at McKinley high, Canton, O. Zazula had been backfield coach for North Dakota one year as Miller's assistant. Witnesses Ordered n Kansas Crime Probe Kansas City, Mo., April 14 (U.R) A special federal grand Jury, ordered by by President Truman to Investigate Kansas City crime, has notified all wit nesses to reappear Monday. The names of two perennial grand jury witnesses were off the list, however. They were democratic boss Charles Binag- gio and his hoodlum hatcnet man. Charles Gargotta. Their bodies were found April 8 in Binaggio's democratic club room on Truman road. Each had been shot four times in the head. Chicago Link Eyed In Binaggio Slaying Chicago, Apr. 14 (U.R) Two Kansas City detectives today sought a "Chicago link" to the slaying of political boss Unanes Binnagio. Lt. Lester Haupt, who arrived here last night with Detective William Myers, hinted that he will contact local underworld big shots during the investiga tion. Hnupt said they plan to run an elaborate series of tests in an effort to match six of the bullets taken from the body of Binaggio and his bodyguard, Charles Gar gotta, with those collected in re cent Chicago gangland slayings. Rocky Mountain Fever Reported in Portland Portland, Ore., Apr. 14 (U.R) The state health board reported today that the year's first two cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever had been reported. Both were in Malheur county. As a result, State Health Doctor Harold M. Erickson reminded fishermen to get vaccinations be fore they took trips east of the Deschutes. During the last two years, 15 esses of the fever have been re ported in eastern Oregon with one death included. NOMINATION CONFIRMED Washington, Apr. 14 (U.R) The nomination of Portlnnd-born Vice Adm. Arthur D. Stmble as new commander of the seventh fleet in the western Pacific was confirmed here yesterday by the senate. April 14. 1950 Halsey, Waters Ring Mix Seen As Big Attraction A main event which any ama teur fight promoter on the west coast would jump at the chance to present will headline the Southern Oregon Boxing club's offering at the armory Wednes day night. Two Negroes who are widely known in west coast simon-pure ranks will occupy the top spot. They are Bull Halsey, from the PAL club in Portland, and Clint Waters, California middleweight champion. They will enter the ring at between 153 and 160 pounds. Waters substitutes for Levi Robinson, who was injured in training. Waters has beaten Robinson three times. Halsey made his debut here on March 22 and immediately captured the hearts of the fans with the easy manner in which he defeated Don Harper, Gold Hill pride. Halsey was runnef-up in a recent AAU tournament in Portland and his tiff with Robin son is being billed as for the Oregon-northern California mid dleweight championship. Waters is said by Promoter Owen Thomas and Larry Bur- dettc to be the most outstanding middleweight in the bay area. He recently won the California middleweight title and is said to be a crowd pleasing free swing ing clouter. Rangers Topple Red Wings, 3-1 Toronto, April 14 (U.R) Gal lant Edgar La Prade of the New York Rangers was the toast of Toronto today as the blueshirts drew even with Detroit in the final rush for the National Hock ey league's Stanley cup. La Prade, who was counted out of the cup playoff three weeks ago when he ripped some knee ligaments in a late season contest, bagged two goals while playing on a knee brace last night to give New York a 3 to 1 victory over Detroit. The triumph knotted tne cup series at one game apiece. Bartle Rated Starter For Salem 1950 Squad Dick Bartle, first baseman for the Medford Nuggets in the Far West Baseball league, has been listed by Manager Ad Liska of the Salem Senators in the class B Western International league as a definite member of the Sena tors roster. Bob Haddock, formerly with Pittsburg, and Nichols Muti who once was with Klamath Falls and with Willows, all of the Far West league, are also listed on the Salem roster. Where To Fish Portland Ore., Apr. 14 (U.R) The state game commission to day forecast excellent fish ing in coastal areas but poorer prospects in most inland re gions when tha early angling season opens tomorrow. Coastal lakes and streams, with the exception of the up per Rogue and Umpqua sys tems, will be open to fishing. Willamette valley streams, ex cept those in Linn and Lane counties and tha North San tiam river system, will be open. Tha commission said there were excellent prospects for good cutthroat fishing In the coastal system. Present water conditions al so appear to be good for fish ing in all streams of tha cen tral coastal area. Coos county streams were described as clear and not too high. Apr. 14 (U.R) University of Oregon's power-la den freshman track and field team won nine of 15 events on Bell field yesterday to defeat the urcgon state college Rooks and the Oregon College of Education varsity in a triangular track meet. The Ducklings scored 72V4 points to 574 for the Rooks while OCE trailed with 33 points. ttaipn button, Bend, member of the Rooks, hurled the javelin 191 feet 5 inches for one of the best marks of the day. Hockey Indianapolis, Apr. 14 (U.R) The Calder cup, emblematic of supremacy in the American Hockey league, today was in the Droud possession of Coach Ott Heller and his Indianapolis Caps, masters of "the impos sible." Fans saw the Caps set a new AHL record for winning eight straight playoff games last night as they nipped the Cleveland Barons 3 to 2 and wrapped up the silver in four straight con tests. SOC Wins Two Games Last week Friday the Raiders dumped Oregon Tech twice on the CP. field 10 to 3 and 28 to 2. SOC is playing all its early season games, at least, on tne Central Point field because its diamond at Ashland is not ready. However, the Lithia city field may be in readiness late this season, reports from there indicated. Chico State's baseball crew is said to be headed by a host of veteran players that helped dmo the Raiders 'in four straight game last season. The SOC team is much Im proved this season with a lot more manpower, potential hit ting power and perhaps some good pitching, although the hurl ing corps has had little chance to prove ltseii troumesome.
