AROUND HOLLYWOOD VIRGINIA MacPHERSON Unite PraM CsmipoadMt fifty VlrftaU MaePherMts Hollywood, Apr. 13 (U.R) Husbands all over Italy are hav i tii? trouble Kctting their dinner on time these days. Their wives are too busy working for the movies. Not in front of cameras. The women weren't hired for their beauty. It's their sewing talent Holly wood's inter ested in. M G M is s D 1 u reine $7 million on their epic-to-end-all-epics "Quo Vadis." They'll shoot it in Rome and they're sprinkling chunks of all this dough arounfi to housewives over there for 10000 costumes. But the way the women are whipping 'em up has Head De signer Herschel plenty confused. For one thing, the gals take the clothes right home with 'em and stitch a sleeve with one hand while they stir the spaghetti with the other. So far they're right on sched ule. With the costumes, that is. The spaghetti's usually dished up late. Work Farmed Out "They're beautiful seamstress es," Herschel said. "But they have the wierdest way of farm ing the work out. All the sleeves are mane In Milan. The skirts are made in Naples. "And we have to dash all around the country picking up the pieces to put the costumes together." But the price of things in Hol lywood being what it is these days this kitchen sewing circle is the fastest and cheapest way to get things done. "And how else could we get all hand-made costumes?" Hers chel added. "We may have to bounce around like tennis balls to get them, but when we do they have an authentic Roman flavor. "Some of the embroidery is out of this world. Their know how has been passed down for centuries and centuries." Embroidered Sheets And Herschel is so carried away with the duds these la dies are turning out, he's going out on a limb to predict em broidered sheets as the next fashion rage. "I'll bet we'll see them all over Hollywood as soon as 'Quo vadis is released, he says. "Just wait till they get an eyeful of Deborah Kerr in my 14-karat old-platcd jersey." This little item isn't anything more than a strip of shimmering cloth. The secret, Hersohcl whis pered, is the way you drape it. Plus, of course, what you have to drape it over. "If you have a beautiful body," he said dreamily, "this will be the most important thing in your 1B52 wardrobe. I'm having it made up in silver-plated and copper-plated cloth, too." Bergman, Spouse May Settle Bitter Feud Out of Court Hollywood, Apr. 13 (U.R) Actress Ingrid Bergman and her husband, Dr. Peter Lindstrom, may settle out of court their bit ter feud over custody of their 12-year-old daughter, Pia, and their property. Attorney Isaac Pacht indicated today. "We are getting together on an arrangement that will be sat isfactory to all parties concern ed," Pacht said as a hearing to take a deposition from Dr. Lind strom was postponed from today until Friday. He indicated attorneys hope to settle the controversy by Satur day, when Lindstrom is due to answer a suit brought by Miss Bergman for custody of Pia and an accounting of their com munity property. Lindstrom has failed to recog nize a Mexican divorce she got in February a week after she gave birth February 2 in Rome to a son futhered by Italian Film Director Roberto Rossellini. The Hollywood doctor an nounced he would bring his own divorce action in California to gain custody of Pia after the act ress' suit was filed here. But he delayed filing his action as at torneys sought an out of court agreement. Gregson Bautzer, Miss Berg man's attorney, is expected to return from Las Vegas, Nev., to day to continue conferences with Pacht. Pacht said there was hope that the matter would be set tled without Lindstrom's dis position hearing. If no settle ment has been reached by Satur day, a court order will be asked for extension of time in which Miss Bergman's suit can be answered, Pacht said. Mom- sen, assistant chief of naval operations for undersea warfare, said that invasion and occupa tion of a major power can not vet be accomplished by "such half measures ' as planes and submarines. "By fully exploiting the use of sea power it will always be pos sible for this country to ensure that a war will not be fought on our own soil and will be car ried to the terrain of the pos sible enemy," he said. In a speech prepared for de livery before the local combined business men's clubs. Momsen also said that indications were strong that Russia is planning for eventual war with the United States. 'Just when, we do not know." he added. Momsen said that the U. S. navy is putting more emphasis on anti-submarine warfare be cause Russia is concentrating on Duiiaing undersea cratt. He said the U. S. naw will make a new type of sub, the submarine killer, its main anti submarine weapon. The navy disclosed in Washington Mon day that three of the new anti submarine subs had been or dered. Momsen said the "most serious problem" in anti-submarine war fare is the fact that present de vices for detecting subs have shorter ranges than the effec tive distances for postwar tor pedoes. Until this problem is solved, Momsen said, the advantage will be with submarines. "On the other hand if we do solve it we will be able to drive submarines off the seas." Mom sen said. I have reason to believe that we will solve this problem, and it my prediction is correct, sub marining will become a mighty dangerous business."
