Compromise Plan
For Apartment
Setback Reported
The city planning commission
last night voted to recommend
to the city council that a seven
foot setback line be established
for the seven-story apartment
house which Conies Construction
company, Portland, plans to
erect at 10th street and Oakdale
avenue.
The action was taken at a
hearing. Council acceptance of
the recommendation is expected
to clear up the last lenal impedi
ment to construction so far as
the city of Med ford is concerned.
Councilmcn may hear the pro
posal at their regular session
April 18.
Officials of the company orig
inally planned to build the struc
ture out to the property line, and
the setback recommended is in
effect a compromise between the
builders and property owners of
the neighborhood. City ordi
nance provides that setback lines
be the average of others on the
street. Average where the apart
ment is planned is understood
to be about 20 feet. Legislation
will have to be drawn up per
mitting the exception.
Several residents objected to
off-the-street parking contem
plated for the apartment.

Objections Meet
INight' Census
Enumerators Here
Census enumerators attempt
ing to make a count of transients
staying in Medford hotels last
night encountered numerous pro
tests and occasional hostility In
the "T-night" nose-count ordered
by the United States census bu
reau, Several guests demanded to
know why tiiey should be re
quired to fill ouUa questionnaire
when they had already done so
at home. Enumerators on hand In
the hotel lobbies explained that
the census bureau had no way
of knowing, yet, whether the
transients had been counted be
fore and that the count at hotels
was being undertaken all over
the nation as a kind of double
check to be sure that no individ
ual is missed. Duplications of
questionna'- - will be taken into
account at the bureau's centrai
office and no person will be
counted more than once, they
pointed out.
Demands Law
One Intransigent transient de
manded to see a copy of the law
that said he had to answer the
questions. Harried desk clerks
were referring all Complaints to
the enumerators assigned to the
hotels.
Ray Feves. district supervisor
of the census from Eugene, was
in Medford yesterday to check
on the progress of the count in
this area, and to prepare for "T
night " enumeration.
Aside from the objections last
night, enumerators here have re
ported excellent cooperation
from citizens being counted.
