When I squawked to a native Floridian about the matter he passed it off lightly. He said: "Don't you wish they had the blessing of these wonderful rainy days in New York? We have no water short age here. We don't have to hire rainmakers in Florida." 1 changed the subject. What irri tated me was that he didn't even say it was "unusual weather. Cooking So you claim your wife is a good cook? Can she make "Hush Puppies"? That is a Florida culi nary favorite. If your matrimon ial mate doesn't know how to make "Hush Puppies" she can find out by reading the book titled. "Cross Creek Cookery, by Marjorie Rinnans Rawlings. Among the innumerable exam ples of Florida food favorites mentioned in this book are "Florida Soft Shell Turtle Soup," "Donax Broth," "St. Au gustine Deep Fried Shrimps," "Florida Backwoods Biscuits," "Swamp Cabbage," "Alligator Steak" and "Canned Rattlesnake Meat." Alligator steak is said to be quite a delicacy. Rattlesnake meat is said to be good, too, but it has been reported that former Governor Grant, of Florida, who .MimimiiitiiiiiiiimiMMM" Postman Should Deliver Insurance Checks Any Day Washington, Apr. 11 U.R Most of the 1,800,000 veterans who have not received their special GI life insurance divi dends can relax. Industry sources estimated the cost of roughly more than $500 million. The navy disclosed officially that it has placed $234,927,263 worth of orders with eight air craft manufacturers out of fiscal 1950 funds. The figure covered only airframes and did not in clude engines, instruments, spare parts and other necessary items. The navy's statement was the first disclosure by either the navy or air force of 1950 pro curement plans although the year runs out in 2, months. was very fond of rattlesnake meat, said he first wanted to know "if the snake had bit him self." Incidentally, did you know the duchess of Windsor had writ ten a cook book titled ."My Fa orite Southern Recipes"? I saw the duchess of Windsor in Palm Beach recently. She continues to be a very smart looker. Pleas Note Florida boosters are very con scious of the value of major league baseball teams playing exhibition games in the state during the training season. Some Miami ocean front hotels give the major leaguers a special rate of eight dollars a day for room and meals. People Harry Richman, the veteran night spot entertainer, and his charming spouse, Yvonne, spend the winter in their house in Miami and their summers on their 43 acre cattle ranch in Ne vada. . . . Martha Raye is now a fiermanent resident of Miami and ives there all the year around except when away for entertain ment engagements. She is short ly due to appear for two weeks at the Hotel Flamingo, in Las Vegas, Nev. Asides The Florida International Base ball league consists of teams from the seven principal towns of Florida and one from Havana. The league has been in existence four years. Havana has won the pennant every year. ... As for the hardest language to learn, Imo Colemenares, Los Angeles language teacher, says it is Japa nese. Says Doctor Colemnares: "Japanese has three different al phabets and one cannot read Japanese without knowing Chi nese." Briefly Am informed an alligator started to cross the main high way near Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and was run over by an automo bile. I didn't know alligators got as close to the highway as that. . . . Being compelled to give their exact age to the census taker or suffer severe penalties is very hard on some women. It is not always a matter of vanity. Many husbands do not for certain know how old their wives are. I know of a fellow who thought the woman he married was 32 at the time of the wedding but he found out later she was really 49. Twins To what extent do twins run in families? That is, if a man's mother, or grandmother, gave birth to twins is it likely he will be the father of twins? And how often do twins become the par ents of twins? The most interest ing situation I have recently heard of regarding twins is the case of a man in Olive Branch, Miss. He was .married three times. He had twins by his first wife, twins by his second wife and two sets of twins by his third wife. High Prices Southeastern Floridians are putting up a terrific organized battle against the high price of milk, which at this writing, is 26 cents a quart. Among the organi zations joining in the demand that something be done about a lower price for milk in Miami and vicinity is the American Le gion. The price of milk in Miami is now 42 per cent above that of the pre-World War II period. Sidelight Saw Mary Rogers, daughter of Will Rogers in Palm Beach. Mary seems very well fixed fi nancially. She is due to sail for New York shortly in her private yacht. ... At the polo field across from the cottage where we are currently domiciled, I saw Laddie Sanford in action. He has been playing polo here all winter. He has now left to play polo for about a month in California. After that he and Mrs. Sanford (Mary Duncan) will go to Alaska for a month of hunting and fishing. Follow ing that they will spend the sum mer in Old Westbury, L. I.
