Some of the answers were given today in an army dis closure that a division field ex ercise which has been going on since April 3 was a test of the area's defense against just such an eventuality. C (U.R At least one student on the Univer sity of North Carolina campus is worried over the typeof "beauty" that may represent his school nationally. An organization on the cam pus is sponsoring a beauty con test. A girl is to be chosen on the basis of "personality, looks, and activeness in campus affairs." Anybody can vote, at a penny per ballot. Fretting over the possibilities, one student wrote a letter to the Dally Tar Heel. He had this to say: "Everything possible should have been done to see that Carolina is represented by the prettiest, most personable, and most all-around co-ed. Says et'Ls Face It ". . . But let's face it. As the contest now is being conducted, if the 'I've Got an Oil Well Club' were to sponsor the local Lena the Hvena. don't think for a minute that we wouldn't be represented by this monstrosity. ". . . if the prettiest, most all around girl does win and does become our representative ... it will just be a happy coinci dence." The apprehensive correspon dent said vote buying was frowned upon "even" in politics. A beauty contest, he wrote, is usually far less corrupt. Another letter commented on the "beautiful co-eds forging ahead penny b y penny into the rat race Tor the title, Miss Beautiful Junior Miss'." Suggestions Offered Suggestions were offered to combat this apparent evil. Stamping of ID cards and a check-off roster headed the list. The front page carried pic tures of three of the leading candidates. All appeared well equipped to do beauty battle. But with such enthusiastic ob servers, a change is in the cards for beauty contests at the Uni versity of North Carolina. As die letter to the editor said, the winner should be the Rirl who has the "fullest de gree of characteristics" and not the one who has the "fullest money pouch." Sunday. April 9, 1950 Lnval M. After "capturing" U.S. army tanks and vehicies and utilizing highway D9, they were moving north and threatening to grab Tacoma. The aggressor forces attached the 9th infantry, forcing it to ex ecute a "retrograde movement," a term denoting withdrawal to an advantageous position. But in the evening, the 9th infantry, reorganized and re inforced, made a vigorous coun teiVittack. The aggressor air borne troops were "annihilated," and Tacoma. Seattle and the northwest were made secure. Who's Flying Plane? Everett, said he wasn't bother ing about the controls at the time because he thought Tomlin was operating them.
