B. cuies arc A study by the Chicago Civic frrii.rntinn showed that four cities, Cleveland, Chicago, De troit and Boston, boosted teach ers' pay in 1949 and nine cities raised salaries in 1948. Salaries In the big cities showed a wide range. In Pittsburgh and Buffalo be ginning teachers received $2,200 annually, while some experienc ed New York teachers received as much as $5,323. Minimum salaries paid ele mentary teachers holding a B.A. degree ranged from the low of $2,200 In Pittsburgh and Buffalo to a high of $3,046 In Detroit. The median minimum salary in the 13 cities for elementary teachers with B. A. degrees was $2,500, while for those with a master's degree it was $2,784. Cities paying over these med ians were Detroit, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Baltimore. San Fran cisco and Milwaukee. ACCOUNTANTS SPEAK UP Columbus, O. Lessons Learned in U. S. Here in America, city planners learned a lesson from the tailor made atomic bomb centers at Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Richland, Wash., and Los Alamos, N. M In Forest Park, 111., a 2,500-acre garden city to take care of 30.000 people is one of several Ameri can post-war projects. One of the largest model cities in the world is scheduled for India. It is to be located in East Punjab on a bare Ganges valley plain 140 miles north of New Delhi. A city of half a million is envisioned, complete with its own government, administrative unit, university township, and industrial section. Near Mexico City an ultra modern community of 5,000 is being constructed by a Mexican manufacturer, who may or may not have an eye on new busi ness. Another is being built In Brazil to take care of 25,000 workers in the tractor and air plane engine Industries there. Britain Has Projects Britain s ministry of town and country planning has started the development of five towns near London to take care of the big overflow of more than 250,000 people from the metropolis. Oddly, the planned city Is nothing new. The Egyptian city of Kahun, built about 3000 B. C for work ers constructing the Illahun pyr amid, was among the first re corded example of a planned city.
