Next to Mail Tribune Harvey Girl On Comeback Trail In Southwest U. 5. Chicago (U.R) The Harvey Girl famed in song, story and movie, is coming back in the southwest. Travelers on the Santa Fe rail way, riding the California Lim ited between California and Chi cago, once again will have their meals at the Harvey houses along the line. The change will be ef fective on April 2, when dining cars will be removed from the train. Explains Revival In explaining the revival of the tradition-steeped station eat ing houses, R. T. Anderson, gen eral passenger traffic manager of the Santa Fe, said "we are confident the revival of these dining arrangements will be re ceived enthusiastically by the mass of tourists of the west and southwest. "Vacationers have solicited our consideration of a more lei surely type of trip through the Indian country of New Mexico and Arizona, and the new sched ule of the California Limited has been patterned along these lines." To Enlarge Staffs Because of the stops at meal times, the running time of the train will be lengthened so pas sengers can enjoy three meals daily en route. "The new program means adding to our Harvey house staffs at Albuquerque and Gal lup, N. M.; Winslow, Williams and Scligman, Ariz., where meals will be served to California Lim ited passengers," Anderson con tinued. "Some new building and remodeling of the dining rooms, particularly at Seligman, will be undertaken. We believe the pro gram has a definite appeal to vacation travelers. "The change does not affect the Super Chief, Chief, El Cap itan and Grand Canyon Limited. They will maintain their present dining car facilities." Only One Train For many years the Califor nia Limited was the only train on the Santa Fe which carried a dining car through between Chi cago and Los Angeles. All other trains stopped at the Harvey houses for meals. With the advent of the Chief and speeding up of schedules on other trains, the eating places gradually were eliminated. Even so, the houses were maintained and many travelers took advan tage of a 15-minute stop at Win slow or Albuquerque to dash in and get a cup of coffee, just to see the Harvey Girl in her black uniform, with white apron and cap. How Code Worked The old-time traveler was amazed nt the efficiency of the service. The one custom which caused comment was the "code" system the girls had adopted in the bcveraRo department. One girl would take the order of the patron, always ending up with the type of drink desired coffee tea, or milk, and if cream was desired. She then marie her way to the Kitcnen. Anotncr girl soon brought in the order for the pas senger while a third would fill his cup. What stumped the patron was how the girl filled his cup exactly as requested, yet she had not taken his order. Code Was Answer The answer was the code. For example, the cup turned upside down on the saucer signified cof fee and cream: cup straight up. black coffee; cup turned over Pituitary Gland of Swine Supplying Medicine (or Man By Paul F. Ellis United Press Science Editor New York, Mar. 31 W.P.) The swine has been a source of food for man through the cen turies, and now that animal is supplying medicine. The medicine is a hormone, known as acth, which medical scientists are finding equally as effective as another hormone, cortisone, in treating some dis eases heretofore classed as in curable. Acth is produced from the pit uitary gland of the swine, and like cortisone it is precious and expensive. Current prices of acth are $200 a gram, or about $5,000 an ounce. Expensive By-Product The hormone acth may be the world's most expensive and most valuable by-product. It has been produced by Armour and company, from slaughtered hogs and because of the Armour re search facilities other packing rnmnanics have been shipping their supply of pituitaries to Armour. Recently, Wilson and company, another large pacxer, announced it was in the busi ness, too, of making acth. The scientists working with acth are hopeful a synthetic ma terial may eventually be made, but they are not as far on the road to total synthesis as those working with cortisone. In the first place,, acth has not been iso lated in absolute pure form and the scientists are not sure of the characteristics of the acm mole cule. Stimulates Gland Preliminary studies with acth have shown that the hormone stimulates generally the adrenal glands into producing cortisone and other hormones that are necessary for health in the nu man being. As in the case of cor tisone, the hormone causes some bad reactions in patients but the reactions disannear promptly when the injection of the sub stance is stopped. Many acth re searchers are convinced that the undesirable reactions have been the result of overdosage. The scientists are not convinc ed that swine pituitaries are the only major source of the nor mone. Thev are working with other animals and have found that shccD Dituilaries also pro duce the hormone, but sheep are not as plentiful as swine. Grades of Priority As of now. the Armour com pnny has set up four grades of priority in the distribution of acth. The researchers trying for a synthetic acth get first call, and second is clinical research. The third priority goes to addi tional clinical research, and ino. 4 is the general public. Only those in the first two categories are now receiving acth. with the handle to left, tea. Unless the passenger decided he didn't like to see his cup up side down, his beverage came in just as he ordered it. Otherwise, there was a little confusion, but it was not the fault of the Harvey Girl. SIZE ISN'T EVERTHING Sambridge, Mass. This doggy night-lifer is escorted to the theater and the gay spots by a luscious blonde every night. The stag line frowns. Three's a crowd and bu person ic bable. the Chihuahua charmer, doesn t like crowds. The blonde Is Janie Stevens, 23, of Aurora, Ind., a pert pint sized singer at the Old Knick, a cafe-theater specializing in melo drama, red checkered table clothes and beer. Miss Stevens, who stands four feet 11 inches and weighs 95 pounds, Chihua in hand, is the star attraction. Do Town Together Janie, a singer since she was 15, started taking Supersonic Sable to the theater with her each evening. After the show they do the town together. Sable's life, however, was not always one of gay revelry and gadding about the Gay White Way. Before her emancipation she used to remain at Miss Ste ven's apartment and snooze while her mistress was out win ning the bread and dog biscuits. This prosaic existence ended abruptly when Miss Stevens found that upon returning home after a hard night at the theatre Sable would be full of life and ginger. She would enlist all sorts of guises and cute tricks to get her mistress to forsake the sack for a little frisking and good na tured play. Janie Rebels The result? Janie Stevens got very little sleep. "Enough!" cried Janie. "From now on you can go to all the shows with me. Then maybe we'll both get some sleep." The following night Sable had her first taste of New York's night life. She started with the theater, followed by visits to many of the better bistros. She polished off the evening with a ride home in a taxi, en sconced beside her mistress. Then a quick canter around the block and Sable and Janie re tired for the night. It worked. Sable was all tuck ered out and slept like a dog until very late the next day. Jar Of Olives Said To Forecast Weather Sydney, Australia. (U.R) A Sydney grocer has a jar of olives on his shelf that are not for sale. They are "weather prophets." One fine, sunny, blue-skies morning, a customer walked in and pointed to the olives. The grocer, C. W. Mansell, wouldn't sell them. He told his customer a dark rim round the top and the darkened olives meant it was go ing to rain. "If the weather's good, the fluid is clear and olives pale green," he said. The customer went away, shaking his head. By mid-afternoon a terrific thunderstorm broke out and several people were struck by lightning at the beach. For days the grocer had crowds of curious visitors.
