Mar." 29 (U.R) Friends today rallied to the sup- port of Orba timer Jackson, 4J, who worked on California and Oregon farms for two years while he was listed by the FBI as one of the nation's ten "most wanted" fugitives. Acting on a tip supplied by a post office department circular, officers arrested Jackson last Thursday at an Aloha, Ore., chicken ranch where he had been employed under the as sumed name of Kenneth J: Van Kempen. Jackson's employer, C. L. Kirkland, who had been una ware of his ranch hand's iden tity, started a move Monday to collect a defense fund for JacR son. Kirkland said the fund will be used in a court fight to have Jackson's prison "good time" re stored, to avert an additional sentence for his escape from the federal penitentiary at Leaven worth, and to obtain an early parole. per, and of Christ's resurrection after Roman soldiers had block ed the entrance to His tomb. SHOTS AND PILLS The advantages of injecting a drug are many. When a drug is iniected. the doctor knows the whole dose is used.. If a pa tient takes a drug by mouth, he may decide that the dose is "too strong" and take in stead, what he thinks is right. Upon injection, the drug is im mediately util ized. If taken by mouth it may not be ut. Brady completely ab sorbed or may be "hustled' through the digestive tract inci dent to diarrhea or may even be vomited. Occasionally, In the presence of a peptic ulcer or other diges tive disturbance, drugs taken by mouth may produce nausea or other distress. When the drug is injected, this possibility is avoided. Some drugs are not effective when taken by mouth. Insulin is an example of this. Other drugs must be injected into a blood vessel for the reason that they are ineffective by mouth and too irritating to inject below the skin. Generally speaking, if a drug is effective when taken by moulh and does not cause any undesir able side effect, there would seem to be very scant need for injecting it. Iron, for example, is usually well tolerated when taken in aporopriate form and dose by mouth. The need for in jecting iron is highly question able. Certain hormones are destroyed by the digestive process and are totally ineffective by mouth. Other hormones are highly effec tive when taken by mouth. Liver extract is used for injection be cause the equivalent in terms of the original nrociuci woum im pose upon the patient the diffi cult task of consuming great quantities of a very unpalatable material. Liver extract is used for cer tain specific disorders perni- rinns anemia being the chief in dication. Iron is of very little use in this disease. Simple or nutritional anemia responds to iron taken by mouth. Liver ex tract is of no particular benefit in this tvoe of anemia, it probably of no benefit,, period. A person wno laKes snois oi uytr extract tor tne treatment oi sim ple or nutritional anemia is wast ing a lot of valuable time and nerhans some money. Certain abnormal symptoms of the menopause change of life can be readily conironcci oy nor mones either by mouth or by injection. If the symptoms can be controlled by taking the drug by mouth, what useful purpose is served by taking tne drug Dy injection? The answer is that nothing is gained by injecting the drug when medication by mouth relieves the symptoms. WOBLD'S LADRECT SELLER AT I0 til!;ol 1 PAY MORE p-t 'ii A PLACE FOR EACH I believe that the use of medi cation by mouth is superior to that by injection, in this disorder, tor tne reason mat tne paucni knows or feels the need of the t drug much more than does the doctor, who, after all, is guided in this respect only by what the patient tells him. Ideally, a patient takes the hormone in the minimal doses that provide relief from the symptoms. Anything in excess of this serves no useful purpose. Who can tell best how the pa tient feels; the patient or the doctor? The patient soon learns to adjust the dose to her needs. There is the added advantage in this method of lower cost. How ever, this does not imply that the patient should take the drug without the supervision of the doctor. As to the question as to why some doctors employ injections only and never prescribe medica tion by mouth I pass. Let your own doctor answer that question. He mav have good reason for it.
