BIX MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE CCNY Favored Over Bradley For National Cagers Title New York, Mar. 28 (U.R City College o New York, the choice of hard-hearted bookmakers, eagle-eyed visiting coaches and 34,250 biased students, is a two point favorite to beat Bradley tonight and become the first col lego basketball team ever to win two national championships in one season. A victory for CCNY will give Coach Nat Holman's Beavers the first sweep of the national invi tation and NCAA tournament titles- .1 VIT CCNY beat Bradley in the MT finals last week, 60 to 61, and tonight's NCAA clash also will mark the first time the same two teams have played for both crowns in the same season. CCNY Sophomore Team rrw's suddenly poised soph omores are solid choices to whip the hard running prides of Pe oria 111., again but both teams are tired and the result may de pend largely on the two cohi.ih.-s. CCNY's young team has played 28 games this season, including tix straight tournament tri umphs; Bradley has played 35. including five tournament tussles. With the outcome depending largely on judicious use of sub stitutes and ability of the key players to keep from being put out on fouls, can young Forddy Anderson, Bradley's 30-year-old coach, outmaneuver Holman. veteran of 31 coaching teasons at CCNY? Dtfsni on Dambrol Will Anderson find a defense to stop Irwin Dambrot, CCNY senior co-captain, from scoring from the foul circle with his left handed jump shots? Local teams, familiar with the slim, pre-dental student's favorite shot, kept him under control but Dambrot, ac cording to Anderson, "killed' his Braves in the NIT final when he scored 23 points. Baylor and North Carolina State will meet in the consola tion game for third place in the opener of the Madison Square Garden doublehearier. Sain Voices Balk Protest St. Petersburg. Fla., Mar. 28 U.ri The reaction of big league pitchers to baseball's new balk rule can be summed up In two words: "We object." Johnnv Snin, star right-hander of the Boston Braves, is the latest to voice his displeasure in heated terms.' Johnny, who usually limits himself to two words in an en tire season "hello," when he re ports in the spring and "good bve" when he heads for his New port, Ark., home in early Octo ber roasted the new regulation at length after five balks were called in the Braves' 18 to 16 victory over the Detroit Tigers yesterday. "The rules committee Is made up chiefly of hitters and fans who don't want to see the pitch ers get a break." he said. "It's hard for me at this late date to change my entire pitching style Just for the sake of those who want to see the hitters dominate the game." March 28, 1950 abilily but lacked power at bat Medford made but five hits off Jacksonville pitchers for an 8-to-1 win. Although the track meet with the Cavemen last week was what is called a "short distance'' af fair, in which the regular run ning events are cut a quarter so the 100 becomes a 75-yard race, the 220 a 150, the 440 a 330 and so on, Medford looked like a tough foe. Grants Pass was missing sev eral of its key men in the meet, including boys on the state cham pionship runner-up basketball team who were resting after the recent state tournament. Chances are that when these youths re turn the Cavemen will be tougher. Better Balanced Now Medford looked much better balanced this year than it was in 1949 when the Black Tornado was strong in running events but relatively weak in the field events. This season while the running events may still be the stronger, the field events have improved. Yesterday the high school baseball .squad went through hitting, fielding and strategy drills under Coaches Alex Mc Donald and Frank Roelandt. The pitchers got into the act with a drill in which they fielded bunts and threw the ball to either of the bases or to home. Drill by the track team can didates consisted largely of keep ing loose by running or throwing the discus or shot. Improved timing on getting started in races and the stride to use in hurdling or in pole vaulting wus also stressed by the boys. New Balk Rule Dated For Coast Ball League Los Angeles .Mar. 28 (U.R) Pitchers in the Pacific Coast Baseball league will be working under a new balk rule when the 1950 season opens today. N .Y., Mar. 28 (U.R) The revelation that N.B.A. Champion Ezzard Charles is suf fering from a heart injury today threatened the already jumbled heavyweight situation with com plete chaos. It was not definitely known whether Charles' injury would prove serious enough to force his retirement, but boxing men were viewing with alarm the prospect of the confusion that would follow such a move. One Thing Certain However, as of today, only one thing was certain the N.B.A. title fight scheduled here tomor row night between Charles and Freddie Beshore of Oakland, Cal., is off. Promoter Dewey Michaels can celled the bout "definitely and forever" when he was informed Rogues Sign Outfielder Medford Rogues (Nuggets) gained another outfielder for its spring training camp due to open April 10 when the New York Gi ants assigned Roy J. Frenna. a 20-year-old six foot tall and 175 pound righthander here. Business Manager Mel Car penter of the Rogues said that Frenna, whose hometown is San Francisco, is the 18th youth signed by the Rogues or assigned here by either the Giants or Se attle of the Pacific Coast league. Another half dozen youths are expected to attend the training camp at Santa Maria. Cal.. on their own. They may be signed to Rogues' contracts if they prove their ability. Ready Two Months But Michaels also apparently was regarding Charles' injury as possibly more serious than the official report of the commis sion's doctors, who said that Charles should be ready to fight again in two months. "Charles has been told that he has a heart injury," said Michaels as he began the gloomy business of returning the $30,000 advance ticket sale. "We don't know whether he'll be able to fight again." Softballers Meet April 3 The Medford Softball associa tion will meet next Monday, April 3, at a place to be an nounced later. President Bill Catey. who is retiring president this year, said last night's meet ing was called off when a meet ing place could not be located. Next week's meeting will be the first 1950 association session to plan for the season schedule and sec if there are enough teams in Medford interested to organize a local league. One report this morning was that at least one prospective manager had contacted Softball teams in Grants Pass and Ash land to sec if a league made up of teams from those communities plus Medford and perhaps other towns could be formed. It was known that at least two of last year's sponsor would not have local teams this season. Ticket Sales Up For Mat Rematch Mack Lillard, local wrestling promoter, today reported an un usually heavy upsurge in seat reservations for Thursday night's card with the announcement yes terday that Georges Dusette and Frank Stoiack would meet in a return match. Fans had hardly settled down to witness what promised to be a gruelling affair when the prin cipals fell from the ring. Dusette was so injured in the tumble that he was unable to resume hostilities. Lillard figures the return dale should be a "whoppcroo" with both men out to show they could have won last week. The supporting card, as usual on Lillard's shows, will rival the main event for action. The mid dle encounter pits Leo Wallack, currently the class class of the northwest, against Tough Tony Ross and the opener, slated to start at 8:30 p.m., sends Danno McDonald against Charley Carr.
