rOUR MEDFOHD (OHEGON) Chinese Communists Reported Training, Arming Viet Bv Robert C. Miller United Press Correspondent Lao Kay, French Indo-China, Mar. 28 IU.R) French officers said today the Chinese commu nists across the border are train ing and arming the Viet Minh rebel movement in this country. They said "several" Chinese army men have been killed and captured while fighting on the Viet Minh side deep inside Indo China. French border forts, they reported, have been shelled from the Chinese side. The French said Vict Minh troons repeatedly have escaped into China when pursued up to the border, and sometimes are transferred through Chinese ter ritory to a different Indo-Chi nese fighting zone. Doina Guard Duty ' I watched a man with a rifle, , dressed in the Viet Minh unl i form, doing guard duty yester day at the Chinese border village of He Kou, just across the wamsi river. He was plainly visible ' through mv binoculars. i A strong French patrol just returned after 12 days of border operations said two Viet Minh j prisoners admitted they crossed over from China where they had been given refuge and help by the communistts. The prisoners told the French that "many" Chinese came along with them when they recrossed the border to attack French garrisons. The French commander at Baxat, a border fort 15 miles north of Lao Kay. said 300 reb els attacked his fort from Chi nese villages. Ultimatum Sent Two weeks ago Chinese com munists sent an ultimatum to the French garrison at Man- mei, 40 miles east of here, say ing, " Leave or we attack, the French did not answer and the Chinese failed to attack. French officers said Chinese communists were smuggling large quantities of captured na tionalist arms and equipment in to Viet Minh. One recent ship ment was estimated to include New-Found Serum Converts Drunkards Paris, Mar. 28 (U.R) A young French medical doctor claimed today that he had converted 12 confirmed drunkards into tee totalers with single injections of a newly discovered serum. The doctor, Jean Oamard, 36. said he believes he can cure thousands more with the same treatment. Gamard said it took four and one-half years of research on ani mals before he developed the scrum. His inspiration came from the sight of railroad work ers spending their pay buying red wine, he said. "Their wives and children suf fered and so did they," the doc tor said. Gamard has refused to treat hundreds of patients who tele phone, write or stagger to his home in Villeneuve-St. Georges, a suburb of Paris. "I now want to test my dis covery thoroughly in hospitals and laboratories before giving any more injections, he said. I am a country doctor, not a research scientist." Public health officials have de scribed his results as "astonish ing" and are investigating the possibilities of conducting con trolled research on the serum. i- .i- A $1.00 VoFm - Tow fy Onff LIMIT 3 TO A CUSTOMER PRICED LOW K2S. Most of them, a French captain said, were "bet ter than ours." The French said the rebels for the first time are using medium artillery which "certainly was imported from China." In the two heaviest attacks ever made against the French forts at Phelu and Nghiadc last month, dead Chinese were found among the bodies of Vie Viet Minh attackers. Officially Neutral The Chinese officially are neu tral in the Indo-China war. But Emilc Cazimajour, Lao Kay dis trict commissioner, said they actually are encouraging their soldiers to join up with Viet Minh. Dozens of captured Viet Minh leaflets were shown me, all tell ing of "direct help" the Chinese are giving Viet Minh. J he trench said the difficulty of patrolling hundreds of miles of the mountainous frontier, with the limited troops at their dis posal, is increased by the fact that the rebels have the whole China border as an escape route. Husband Uncertain For Sharman Douglas London, Mar. 28 iU.R) Blonde Sharman Douglas, daughter of U. S. Ambassador Lewis Doug las, doesn't care a hoot whether she marries an American or a Briton. Anyway, she isn't thinking of marrying anybody for a long time, and she has no idea who he will be. The 21-year-old Miss Douglas gave those answers today to questions which have titillated British and American society for three years. She didn't say whether her answers would be news to Peter Lawford, Hollywood actor who sent her winging away from a. New York airport for London recently with a "just friends" farewell kiss. Her name has, been linked ro mantically with those of half a dozen noblemen since she came to London three years ago. Law ford's was the latest name on the list, added during her recent visit to the United States. The atomic energy commis sion, the air force and the na tional advisory committee for aeronautics are cooperating in an intensive research program on atom-powered planes. But none are willing to predict suc cess in the early future. While details of research arc top-secret, it is known that the two biggest difficulties are: Shield Needed 1. Developing a light-weight weight shield to protect aircraft crews from the deadly radia tions of atomic engines. This problem will be attacked when the AEC completes its materials testing reactor due for construc tion near Arco. Ida., next year 2. Finding some wav to con vert the heat generated in the atomic engine to propulsive power, without the need for cumbersome steam boilers hard ly suitable for aircraft. Some surprise was expressed here at a speech in Cleveland last week by Andrew Kalitinsky an engineer attached tn Oak nidge. Tonn., by Fiiirrhild Air craft Corp. under an air force contract Kalitinsky is assigned to the "Nepa" project nuclear energy for propulsion of aircraft. j fM lL WDEN TRACTOR 1 1 jMTTm- 2 GREAT MODELS yxR4: mR ,R0UND I i iTrl IMPLEMENTS SEE THE I j Jfo J mm ' SEE THE PRICES I Medford Feed & Seed W 224 NORTH FIR STREET V? Giant Helicopter Ready For Ground Test Culver City, Cal., Mar. 28 (U.R) A giant helicopter built by Howard Hughes was wheeled out of its hangar here today for ground tests. Hughes, who also built the world's largest flying boat, dis closed he had made the world's largest helicopter as he prepared it for its first public appearance. Dubbed the XH-17. it had a 136-foot rotor powered by two General Electric J-35 turbo-jet engines, with exhaust nozzles leading to the rotor tips. Engi neers said it was capable of lift ing tanks or heavy artillery and moving them around. The craft first was designed by the Kellett company of Philadel phia. Hughes bought the rights to it in the fall of 1948 for a re ported S150.000. April 2, at the Shady Cove school to discuss the feasibility of organizing a teen-age club. If the group determines that the project can be undertaken, general meeting of teen-agers and others interested will be called, it was stated. The first meeting is not public. Test Date Set Kalitinsky said a date has been set for test-flying an atomic-powered plane capable of circ ling me globe of surjersonic speeds. He did not indicate when the elate Is. ine atomic energy commis sion declined to comment on the speech, but officials called at tention to a recent Los Angeles address by Dr. Lawrence R. Haf stad. the AK.C director nf reactor development, and leading auth ori on atomic engines.. Hnfstad said that "developing anv kind of an aircraft reactor will be extremely difficult" and intimated that it is too early to tell when it will be feasible 11 ever. To Continue Research Government policy, he said. Is tn continue intensive research tor the next two or three vears, by which time It might be hoped mat data might become avail able to permit a re-evaluation and a more decisive conclusion Ha f start also remarked that "the pessimists, in general, are those best informed'' about the progress of aircraft reactor re search. "The ontimists either are not yet aware of the verv real im mediate difficulties, or they are betthiR heavily on new Ideas and new developments arising during the course of the work," be said. Longer Life Free of Ills Seen By Medical Science By Paul F. Ellis United Press Science Editor New York, Mar. 28 Ol.P.i Medical science is on the fron tier of a new era from which may come a cure for many of the disabling, crippling and aging diseases of the human be ing. The scientists believe that this new era may lead to opportuni ties to give man a longer luc, free of destructive ills. For the first time in history the medical scientists have their fingers on knowledge that may lead them to the basic cause of disease. The knowledge comes from experimental work with two chemical substances. One is known as acth. The other as cor tisone. They are powerful hor mones, substances that the hu man body apparently needs in proper amounts to keep the hu man machine in perfect running order. The doctors emphasize that neither acth nor cortisone is available to the public as yet. The supply is so scarce that it is being used exclusively for re search while scientists seek ways to increase production. Acth is short for adrenocorti- cotrophin. A hormone that stim ulates the adrenal glands. Corti sone is short for 17-hydroxy-ll- dehydrocorticosterone. A hor mone manufactured by the adre nal glands. Right now both hormones are doing things for medicine that even the most optimistic scien tist wouldn't have dared predict only a few years ago. Supplies of acth are being made from the pituitary glands of hogs. Sup plies of cortisone are being pro duced from ox bile. They are probably the most precious sub stances in the world. There is a battle royal going on among research scientists for quantities of the substances to try on human ills. Work is going on in at least 100 laboratories. And trials on human beings are being made in at least 100 hos pitals and institutions. oo tar, the hormones have been used in experimental treat ment of more than 50 different types of disease in man.
