I9S0 Benefits As Result Of War Service Exempt From State Income Taxes Salem, Ore., Mar. 23 U.R Men and women of the armed forces who receive benefits as result of war service will not have to pay state income taxes on such income in most in. stances, the Oregon department of veterans' affairs said today. Oregon men currently on active duty with the armed forces will not be taxed for their incomes except in the high pay brackets. But a certain portion of national guard and armed forces reserve pay received in 1940 will be subject to taxation, the department said. April 15 is the deadline for filing. Exemptions Listed The state veterans' agency listed the following items as tax exempt: 1. Compensation and pensions paid by the veterans administra tion to veterans or their sur vivors. 2. GI insurance death pay ments, and GI insurance divi dends. . . 3. Bonuses paid by other states. . . 4. All subsistence benefits for education and training under the GI bill and public law 16, un employment benefits, and state educational aid payments. 5. Terminal leave and muster-ing-out pay, and government al lotments to dependents of per sonnel on active duty. 6. All disability retirement pay received by wartime emer gency officers from the veterans administration. However, dis ability retirement pay which Is No. 271 NOTIC-I! Military retirement pay for length of service is taxable. First $3,000 Exempt Oregon law exempts the first $3,000 of pay received for active duty in the armed forces. The attorney general's office has ruled that national guard and reserve component pay earned during participation in encamp ments or maneuvers or in armed forces schools rates the $3,000 exemption, but not pay for ar mory drill or other part-time duty, which is considered "In active duty training." News of 4-H CLUBS Sams Valley Livestock club reorganized March IB, County 4-H Agent Cate was present. Margaret Wright was appointed local leader. Officers elected in cluded Jimmy Day, president; Truman Price, secretary; Kath erine Wright, reported; Lea San derson, vice president. Next meeting will be April 1 at the Sams Valley school house. Anyone wishing to join must do so before April 1 to be in club work this year. Mrs. Wright told us the cook- incr rluh would meet March 15 at the school house. Katherine Wright, reporter.
