Llcania M-362 Lictnia S-28S PHONI 2-8116 mm Monday, March SO. 1830 Some soft coal operator! an nounced price increases last week to cover at least part ol the 23 cents a ton they estimate the new coal contract will cost them. Other producers and retail ers are expected to follow suit soon. But they are moving cautious ly. Many will try to absorb as mucn ot tne adaea cost as pos sible to keep from driving more customers to other fuels. For coal, which powered the world's i n d u s trial revolution and until recently has been the only important source of indus try's energy, is losing ground rapidly in the fuel market. In some parts of the country, it has priced itself out already THE TO because of rising production and transportation costs com bined with the greater availabil ity and comparatively lower price trends of oil and natural gas. The coal producers' answer to this new competition is: Chop production costs by holding wages In line. They place most of the blame for the industry's position on Lewis, because labor represents 60 per cent of their costs. Labor Human Factor But the miners' Immovable leader has his own problems, generated by the same forces which have the operators on the spot. Labor ia the human factor in the picture. In a contracting Industry which only in war years has pro vided better than an average of 185 working days annually Lewis is trying to maintain daily wages to compensate for reduced demand for labor. Next to labor, transportation Is the biggest factor in coal's dollar troubles. Freight rates and higher pay for the miners have Joined to double the aver age price of coal delivered since World War II began.
