Alaska !U.R Many more vehicles are using the 1.500 mile Alaska highway from Daw son, B. C. to Fairbanks by way of five mountain ranfies, 129 rivers, 8,000. mountain streams and three time zones. Frank A. Matcalf. Alaska high way patrol chief, said 6.417 auto mobiles, trucks and other ve hicles drove past counters at Tok Junction during 194a. in 1948, 4.462 vehicles used the road. The hichwav. built at a cost of $138,000,000 in 1942, is an all weather gravel type. It is the only route connecting Alaska with Canada and hence me United States by land. Built for military use during the war, the Alaska highway was opened for tourist use in Febru ary, 1B48. The route wanders through a vast, nearly uninhab ited land for hundreds of miles. but the greatest distance between accommodations of some kind is only 94 miles. Shows Profit Decline San Francisco, Mar. 17 U.R) A. T. Mercier, president of Southern Pacific company an nounced today the inal figures of 1949 earnings showed a 25.3 per cent drop from net income in 1948. Mercier reported the net in come of SP transportation sys tem last year was $32,675,617.88. a drop of $11,094,662.36 from 1948. Mercier blamed extremely se vere weather in the west, north central, mountain and Pacific states in the early months of 1949 for affecting earnings. Moreover, he said, the increases in wages plus the 40-hour week, made inroads on the year's profits. It's a Hit! Census Leaders Finish Training, Areas Outlined Training of the three crew leaders who will head the census enumeration In Medford and Ash land during April has been com pleted, it was reported today by Hugh Friel, one of the leaders, who has returned from Eugene where the training course was held. Other leaders Include Mrs. Dorothy Doty, Medford, and Mrs. D. V, Matheny, who will have the Ashland district. Training courses for the 85 enumerators in Jackson county will be conducted here starting March 27 by the crew leaders, Friel said, with actual counting to be started on or about April 1. Desk space has been assigned crew leaders in the city halls in both Medford and Ashland, Check Territories Between now and the start of the training courses, the three leaders will be engaged in a geographical check of their ter ritories, to make sure that there will be no duplications nor omis sions. (U.R) Madison small fry have been caught in ' black market operation. For years the county has been selling swimming pool tickets to children in blocks of 10 for 25 cents. Single children's ticket) sell for five cents. Now it develops that some of the youngsters have been selling single tickets out of their blocks for five cents, returning them 100 per cent profit. The park commission decided to wipe out the black market by discontinuing the block ticket Sales.
