The Braves from Peoria, 111., were a four-point choice over Middlecoff Wins More Golf Togas Lake Park. Fla., Mar. 16 U.R) It was anybody's guess today how much Dr. Cary Middlecoff raked off in cash gratuities for his two-ply victory in the rich seminole golf tournament but it must have been a 10-gallon hat full. The Memphis dentist wound up the tournament yesterday by winning the professional title and then teamed witn C. Douglas Dillon of New York to tie for first place in the pro-amateur event. Middlecoff pocketed $1,500 prize money in the pro event and picked up $1,250 as his share of the purse in the pro-amateur con test. However, he probably earn ed 10 times that amount in the huge "Calcutta pool," which totaled $100,000. Middlecoff shot a two-undcr-par 70 in the closing round of the pro tournament for a 54-hole total of 207. In the pro-amateur division, Middlecoff and Dillon had a two-round, best-ball total of 128. Y. can maintain the remarkable pace it displayed in bowling over de fending champion San Francisco and Kentucky in the first two rounds. Coach Nat Holman's men will furnish the N. I. Hard Running The relentless running game of the Eager Beavers, paced by Ed Warner the tournament's high scorer with 26 points in each game was expected to sweep them right past the de liberate Iron Dukes, who used only six men in their 49 to 47 conquest of LaSalle, Tuesday. The game between Bradley and fourth-seeded St. John's, two resourceful teams that can play either a racehorse or a possession-styled game, was expected to be much closer. And the survivor undoubtedly will be favored to drive on to the tournament title Saturday night. Detroit Cops Hockey Title Detroit, Mar. 18 (U.R) The Detroit Red Wings, having won the National Hockey league championship for the second straight season, concentrated to day on boosting Goalie Harry Lumley in the Vezina trophy race. Mo., March 16--lU.Rl The surprise elimination of a powerful trio Hamline, West minster and River Falls threw the N.A.I.B. basketball tourna ment wide open today as the eight survivors clashed in the quarter-final round. Hamline, defending champion and heavy choice to repeat, was rudely .bounced by a hustling central college team from Fay. ette, Mo., 76 to 66. Davis. Elkins Wins Westminster, top-seeded in the lower bracket, was ousted by Davis and Elkins college, 85 to 75. And River Falls, with its brilliant point-maker, Nate De Long, was sent to the sidelines by East Central Oklahoma, 75 to 64. So, with these landmarks gone, where does the tourney go from here? For one thing, only three seeded teams remain Brooklyn college. Central Washington and Indiana State. And none of the eight teams remaining ever has won the tourney before. Brooklyn college loomed the likely favorite from here out, with Baldwin-Wallace and Davis and Elkins, also highly rated. Quarter-Finals All four quarter-final games will be at night, instead of the split day-night programs that marked the first two rounds. Davis and Elkins will start to night's proceedings at 6 p.m. against the University of Tampa and then in order it's Baldwin Wallace vs. Indiana State, Cen tral Washington vs. Central Mis souri and Brooklyn vs. East Cen tral Oklahoma. Business Manager Mel Carpen ter of the Medford Rogues (Nug gets) in the same league said the local club had contacted Roe landt with the same proposition but the local basketball coach decided not to play pro ball. Koelandt was a terrific hitter in the Cascade Baseball league and also is remembered when playing with the Medford Cra ters here some years back.
