Six c 0 n t e s tants will appear, having b e e h chosen from auditions held in the theatre Monday after noon. T h cont c s t a n t s Pat Wilkinson who receive the most votes after tonight's broadcast will appear on the stage March 21 in a final elimina tion contest program. The other three competing will be those three who have received the most votes since the broadcast of March 7. In a condumcntary broadcast, titled, "Operation Portrex", ra dio listeners will "hit the beach" at Vieques island in a recorded eye-witness account of the larg est U. S. joint air-borne amphi bious operation since the war. on the Department of Defense's weekly ABC program, "Time For Defense." toniuht from 8 to 8:30 over Station KYJC. ABC's "America's Town Meet ing" will broadcast the second prugram of its annual Spring tour from Cincinnati on tonight's broadcast over Station KYJC at 8 o'clock. Heard under the aus pices of the Hebrew Union col lege, the program will take as its discussion question "How Can Organized Religion Advance American Democracy?" Smelt Run Believed Heading For Sandy Portland, Ore., Mar. 14 (U.R) Fishermen said today that the annual smelt run appeared to be running past the mouth of the Cowlitz river and heading toward the Lewis and Sandy rivers. They predict, however, that the fish may swing into the Cow litz at any time. Vanguard of the run headed up the Columbia toward the tributaries as Isaac Jolma, Clat skanic fish buyer, said fisher men had spotted the run off the Kalama river during the morn ing. He said most of the fish had left the lower Columbia. Jolma said he believes the fish were taking off mainly for the Sandy, east of Portland, but probably wouldn't reach the riv er for a few days. Brady Almost in immediate succes sion today came three letters from readers in widely separated c 0 m m u mites asking for my opinion of the Cock and Bull, and New Day and the Kayo clinics in their respective com munities. How naive! It goes without saying that the clinic farthest from one's home is the best, and the farther awav it is the better. Back home if the doctor wants a $10 oesinophile count or a Due anaylsis you resent it ana Drand the doctor a rob ber for including the cost of it in his bill. That is back home. When you journey afar to the "clinic" you regard such trifles as evidence of the thorough way the great specialists have of get ting at your trouble and you pay four or five times what the same service or better would cost you back home and cheerfully. After all, you will have something to talk about for many years, some. thing that should impress lay men and doctors alike With your importance. I didn't answer the three queries in detail. Can't take time to do so. Could do if there were only a score or two of letters to answer daily. Can't answer 'em all retail. Taking this means of answering a great many such emeries wholesale. I did mail brief reply to one of the read ers, who inclosed selt-addrcssect envelope, and this is what I said: A doctor worthy of contidence practices under his own name. I leave it to the reader's judg ment try to think of any out standing, distinguished, eminent, leading or popular physician who does not practice under his own name. Originally, up to our own times, a clinic was an institution where patients were studied and treated in the presence of medi cal students; it was for teaching the art of medicines. Only in the past 'thirty years has the term come to have a dif ferent meaning and I believe the attitude of the American Medical Association under the dictatorship of the late Pooh Bah is to blame for it. Today a clinic is generally just a group of doctors who pool the overhead and the gross, putting up what they find is a more imposing front and availing themselves of the free advertising their busi ness place gets under the name of the Squcdunk Clinic adver tising a doctor just couldn't get under his own name. As a "clin ic" racketeer you can enjoy the fruits of advertising and retain membership in the medical society; as an honest practitioner you'd be expelled from the medi cal society in jig time if you be haved like that. The "clinic" evil, together with the brass specialist evil, is largely accountable for the high cost of medical service in this country today. It is so difficult to draw the line between ethical profes sional conduct and legitimate business practice that physicians in group practice who adopt or accept the name of "clinic" in evitably become suspect in the minds of their colleagues. May the suspicion grow and grow until the racketeers can no longer brazen it out- Lct no knucklehead impute to me any dislike or disapproval of bona fide clinics where patients unable to pay can get free treat ment. It is rather tscarce these days, but your druggist should be able to locate some for you. Raw Beef Ts raw beef better for cure ol anemia than cooked meat? Is it sate to eat raw beef coming from govern ment inspected packing houses? (L. m. T. Answer I know of no evidence tht beef will cure anemia unless the anemia is Incident to starvation in which case it is no better tir worse than any oiher meat. Raw meat has no advantage over cooked meat. Re frigeration usually suppresses the activity of heef tape-worm but U would be impractical to so thoroughly inspect an entire carcass as to be able to certify mat it was iree 01 dcci tape-worm.
