i I i :$ Gene Sarazen Defends Miami Golf Toga Miami Bach, Fla., Mar. 9 (U.R) The old guard was pulling for "defending champion" Gene Sarazen today as the Miami Beach open golf tournament got under way but the 48-year-old Itar himself expected a young up-and-coming player to cop the top prize. The pudgy Sarazen, one-time holder of just about every title you can name, is the defending titlist in this tourney because it hasn't been held since 1930, Uh Mail Tribune Want Adi Bevos, San Diego lose Exhibition Ball Games Anaheim, Cal., Mar. 9 (U.R) Sacramento and San Diego meet in an exhibition game today af ter both defeated their oppo1 nents yesterday. Sacramento turned Portland errors into runs to take a 3 to 1 decision in a well-pitched game, while San Diego outlasted Los Angeles 17 to 15. Other tilts tonight, both of them in the championship brack et, will send Central Point first team against Phoenix at a o clock after Eagle Point plays Rogue River first quintet at 7 o'clock. Phoenix drew a bye in the first round. Friday Games Timed Games in the tourney Friday will put together Rogue River second team and Sams Valley at 3 p.m., St. Mary's vs. Gold Hill at 6 p.m.. Central Point sec onds vs. Lone Pine at 7 p.m. and Shady Cove against Cen tral Point third team at 8 p.m. The first two games listed are in the consolation bracket and the other two are in the championship bracket. A fifth game may be played tomorrow at 4 p.m. This will be scheduled only if Phoenix loses this evening's game with Cen tral Point's first team, In which event Phoenix will play Jack sonville in the first round of the consolation .bracket. Saturday's Schedule Should Phoenix win tonight then Jacksonville will play the winner of the St. Mary's vs. Gold Hill game at 5 p.m. Sat urday. The St. Mary's-Gold Hill clash is a consolation bracket game. Last night in the first round of the tournament. Central Point second team defeated Howard 28 to 24 in the best game of the day. Central Point third team edged Sams Valley 13 to 7 and Shady Cove edged Rogue River second team 11 to 8. The Central Point third team replaced West Side which re signed from the tourney due to illness and one of its key players being out of own. Yesterday's Contests Yesterday afternoon's games saw Lone Pine down Griffin Creek 29 to 14, Central Point first team edged Jacksonville 17 to 11, Eagle Point topple St. Mary's (Medford) 26 to 17 and Rogue River defeat Gold Hill 30 to 18. Jack Morris Mentioned In NCAA Track 'Guide' Jack Morris, outstanding local athlete and state high school champion in high and low hur dles, is mentioned in the official NCAA guide, a track and field record book, put out by the National Collegiate Athletic as sociation. Morris receives mention for his 14.6 mark in the high hur dles and his 22.2s record in the low hurdles set last spring in the southern Oregon vs. Portland district meet here. Rangers And Red Wings Capture Victories In National Hockey Loop By United Press The New York Rangers, back in third place in the National Hockey league, were singing the praises of Don (Bones) Raleigh today as they hustled homeward for a game with the league-leading Detroit Red Wings tonight. The Rangers opened a suicide schedule of four games in five nights by clouting the Chicago Black Hawks last night, 4 to 2, at Chicago. The victory enabled the Rangers to climb past the Montreal Canadiens, who were idle. At Boston, the Red Wings scored three goals in the final period to edge the Bruins, 5 to 3. March 9, 19S0 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE MIME Interim Committee Confirms Choice To Education Board ' Salem, Ore., Mar. 9 (U.R) Dr. R. E. Kleinsorge of Silver ton has been confirmed for a sec ond nine-year term as a member of the state board of higher education. But confirmation by the sen ate interim committee on execu tive appointments came only aft er Sen. Austin Flegel, Portland democrat, accused the board of ignoring the legislature's direc tive for distribution of $6,000,000 for buildings on state university and colleges. Funds Transferred In making the $6,000,000 ap propriation, the legislature had directed that $2,500,000 be used for a new teaching hospital at the University of Oregon medi cal school in Portland. The board of higher education, with appro val of the state emergency board and state board of control, took $1,000,000 of that sum and used it for buildings at Oregon State college. Flegel maintained throughout that the board should have put the whole sum of $2,500,000 in to the hospital, estimated to cost $4,500,000 to $5,000,000, but he voted with the other three com mittee members who attended the meeting for confirmation of Dr. Kleinsorge. Dr. Kleinsorge told Flegel he believed the hos pital will be built just as fast with $1,500,000 set aside for it as it would if $2,500,000 were "lying idle." He said it will take six months to a year just to com plete the plans. Federal funds and private gifts are expected to swell the total fund for the hospital.
