Gerow, president of the East Side Commercial club, thought it was a gag last night when two men attempted to hold him up at his home. The pair rang Gerow's door bell and when he opened the dnor one pulled a gun and said, "This is a holdup." "I thought it was a gag and that the gun was a toy," Gerow said today. Gerow grabbed at the gun. a .43 automatic, which fired twice without hitting anyone. Fi nally, Gerow was struck on the left temple, apparently with the gun butt. ' the would-be holdup men fled in an automobile. Free Food Program Of Government Seen As Expensive Chore Washington, Mar. 9 (U.R) The government's expanding food give-away program has be come a multi-million dollar op eration. The agriculture department laid today that up to now it has arranged to give away for distribution to needy Amer icans in 47 states surplus foods which cost it more than $3 mil lion under price support pro grams. The foods given away so far re: Dried eggs 1.173,200 pounds (equivalent of 43,000,000 shell eggs), which cost the govern ment about $1,600,000. Dried milk 2,747.980 pounds, equivalent of 11,000,000 quarts of skim milk when reconstitut ed with water. This cost the gov ernment about $340,000. Potatoes 34,804,650 pounds, which cost about $1,300,000. Can'i Be Measured The potato give-away can't be measured in dollars and cents, aince the spuds might have been "dumped" if they weren't given away. Furthermore, the govern ment wouldn't expect to get back it's full cost for milk and eggs, even if it could find a for eign market for these items. This stockpile of food has been, or will be, distributed in every state of the Union except Arizona. It represents only a small fraction of the stocks of these foods which the govern ment is holding under price sup port programs. New orders far the three free foods are pouring in daily from welfare agencies. Officials said Arizona is the only state from which no orders have been re ceived. Food Is Free The food is free at storage points to public and private wel fare agencies, including the bu reau of Indian affairs and the national school lunch Dram am. These agencies must pay trans portation charges. Illinois tops the list of the 47 states from which orders have been received. Illinois is the onlv state which has set up a state wide system for distributing the Mystery Of Open Door Solved By Porilanders Portland. Ore., Mar. 9 (U.R) Dr. and Mrs. Richard M. Illinois has ordered 960.000 pounds of dried milk and 480, 000 pounds of dried eggs. Offi cials said they understand this initial order is expected to fill Illinois' relief needs for three months. Other states and their orders, which already have been deliv ered or will be 'shipped this week, include: California 25,200 pounds of eggs, 2,998,000 pounds of pota toes. The five needles were found late last night in and near homes in the area by council scientists and police using geiger counters. They made a house-to-house search to prevent what officials feared might become "a major disaster" from radium burns. Dr. Jacob Kastner, physicist in charge of the council's radium calibration, said he hoped the other needles would be found to day after questioning of the youngsters who had the five needles recovered. The children had no Idea of the value or dan ger of the needles. Police said no charges would be made against any of the chil dren. They said the youngsters j Loophole Found In Mexico Divorce Laws Mexico City, Mar. 9 U.R) The Ingrid Bergman variety of mail-order divorce was banned in Mexico today by a supreme court ruling, but attorneys hap pily noted a loophole for short term residence decrees. The court ruled yesterday that Mexican judges can divorce only legal residents of the city or state under their jurisdiction. The decision could put out of business the mail-order courts that divorce thousands of for eigners annually. But divorce lawyers said there was nothing to stop cities which prosper from divorce mills from cutting residence requirements down to a few days. Thus, for eigners could get a decree near ly as quickly as before by mak ing a short trip to Mexico. showed no ill effects from hav ing handled the needles but would be kept under observation. Balloon Bomb Maker Disappears In Japan Tokyo, Mar. 9 U.R Dr. To shiro Otsuki. 40. who invented Japan's famed balloon bomb, has disappeared with a 23-year-old office worker and the pair is be lieved to have committed sui cide, police reported today. Otsuki resigned as president of electrical plants in Saitama prefecture northwest of Tokyo March 1 and left for a Hot Springs resort hotel with the young woman. That was the last anyone has seen of them. Otsuki has a sick wife and two children. While he was a major In the Japanese army during the war, Otsuki was credited with 'design ing the balloon bombs with which the Japanese tried to bomb the United States mainland. Eighty thousand new homes were started in January, 1950 30,000 more than in January, 1949.
