That cook book given to pros pective brides at the San Fran cisco Marriage License Bureau is titled "Cupid's Book." In addi tion to being a cook book, it in cludes a variety of helpful hints on home management. Recently when discussing the cook books given the prospective brides at the San Francisco and Seattle Marriage License Bureaus I sug gested the bridegroom be pre sented Willi some kind of book. I thought one titled "Forty Ways to Amuse a Wife" might be ap propriate. This suggestion has not met with the approval of the feminine subscribers. They think the future husband should be presented with a more practical volumn. A Detroit matron sug gests one titled "How to Be a Handy Man Around the House." A Boston lady suggests a vol ume titled "How to Give Your Wife Less Trouble." This book, she says, would give instructions to a husband on how to leave the bathroom in reasonably neat shape after taking a bath, how to get his clothes ready- for the laundry and the tailor, how to put his soiled garments in the hamper, etc.. etc. The first half of the twentieth century will not be over until December 31, 1950. So why do all those experts on various sub jects and activities keep picking the "bests" of "the first half of the twentieth century." Perhaps some new wonders will come on the scene this year. She is truly a remarkable personality. Asking. Queries from clients. Q. My first name is Roman. "Another thing you can bring to the attention of those Scotch A I jrieans who are so conde scending to the Irish," writes a Bostonian named Maquire, is that the first mon of the Christo pher Columbus expedition to land on the American shore was an Irishman named Patrick Ma- guire. I would also like to call attention to. the fact that over thirty of the generals serving under Uen, George wasningion in the Revolutionary War were of Irish birth or descent. Asides. According to a New York old timer there were no punch drunk pugilists in the days of bar fist fighting. He says that started when fighters began to use gloves. He claims fighters' hands were taped under the gloves in a way that made the blows "murderous."
