And the movie, Tugboat Annie' would now be called 'Lana's Luxury Liner'," Nothing Wrong Kellaway was not blasting at Hollywood movies. There's noth ing wrong with THEM, he said but there's plenty wrong with the way the boys sell them. "All this emphasis on the fe male chest," he scoffed. "Noth ing about the star's talent. It's all: Look at her curves. Look how well-developed she is. Look, look, look! Glitterland's grinding out heap of intelligent movies now adays, Kellaway went on. But it attracts the wrong audiences with all those bosomy ads. Detracts From Plot. "And another thing," he went on, "all this emphasis on sex sometimes detracts from the plot of a' movie. An important scene can be playing on the left of the screen. On the right is a girl in a tight sweater. Too many peo ple miss the scene because they're ogling the girl." The revolt is getting results, Kcllaway said. Producers here and there are giving older actors and actresses more chances. And even the younger ones who'd never win a beauty contest are getting good breaks. "Look at Broderick Crawford and Mercedes McCambridgc in 'All the King's Men'," he point ed out. "They aren't pretty. But they came up with dandy charac terizations." There may even come a time, Kellaway hopes, when somebody over 50 has a crack at that "best actor or actress" award. Until then, they're stuck in a "best supporting" rut. Documents Openly Taken To Moscow, Committee Hears Washington, Mar. 8 U.R A former soviet official said today that Russian diplomatic couriers openly delivered highly-secret American documents to Moscow during the war through the lend lease pipeline. The house un-American activ ities committee heard that testi mony from Victor Kravchcnko, who quit the Soviet purchasing commission in 1944 and re nounced communism to take asvlum in this country. Kravchcnko also testified that every Soviet diplomat and every member of the communist party in the United States worked as a spy during the war. "We were merely allies be cause there was a war on," he said. Kravchcnko said he personally helped four Russian couriers to pack for shipment to Moscow "six black suitcases" containing secret data on American war in dustry development. Asked what precautions the Russians took to conceal their shipments, Kravchenko replied with a smile: "None. Who cared? Nobody ever checked them." Upholds Jordan Testimony His testimony corroborated In part a story previously told to the committee by former air tnmo Mat. Oenrne Racey Jordan, wartime lendleasc expediter at the Great Falls, Mont., air base. Jordan had testified that "tnmkloads" of secret American documents passed through Great Falls in Soviet mail shipments, en route to Russia. T na Annnlnc Mat R U.P) Arthur K. Whytc, 55, former publisher of tne san lmcro union-Tribune, died at his home here last night of a heart attack. Wednesday. March 9. 1950 In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS From New York: "A 19-year-old youth, just re leased from a hospital for the criminal insane, slaughtered four STRANGERS and stabbed three other persons in a lU-minute rampage tn rough Brooklyn streets yesterday. His weapon was a 14-inch carving knife, which he grabbed suddenly from a restaurant kitchen when he started on his rampage, TWO young fathers, each push- ing a baby carriage, were encountered by the madman, lie plunged his knife into one of them. It hit a bone and stuck and the killer's fingers slipped from the handle. The stricken man staggered away, The killer followed, plucked the knife from his victim's chest and went after the other youth ful father, who fled, pushing his baby ahead of him. He made it to his house, got through the door and slammed it behind him before the crazed knife-wielder could catch up with him, With four persons dead and three more badly slashed, the bloody incident came to an end when policemen beat the knife out of the killer's hands, over powered him and bound him. THE youth was a colored boy which means nothing at all. A few months ago a white boy ran similarly amuck (in Camden, New Jersey, only a few miles from Brooklyn, where this hap pened) and killed 13 persons be fore he was stopped. He was armed with a gun, which is fast er and deadlier than a knife. MAYBE we can deal with in dividual crazed killers like these two. BUT HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DEAL WITH THE MAD MEN IN THE KREMLIN? ONE of these poor devils (no matter how terrible their deeds, we can only pity, men whose minds go to pieces) was armed with a carving knife. The other had a gun a mere hand gun. Officers said the trio had con fessed they obtained $170 from a neighbor's home and then fled into the woods to avoid being arrested. Police said they ad mitted breaking into the home of rrcd K. Hullman in north Portland. Two of the boys, brothers, aged 11 and 12, watched the house until they saw police ar rive to investigate the burglary They notified their 12-year-old companion, officers said, and then decided to run away. They said they purchased air rifles, pup tents and canned food for grubstake and stayed in the Linnton hills Saturday night and Sunday. They were spotted Mon day morning by an uncle of one boy while out "hunting with the air rifles. All three boys were held in juvenile quarters at police hcad- qunrlcrs. lin have at their command all of the complicated weapons that modern science has been amc to devise. I think we can all agree that these two poor mental, ly-sick youngsters (one in Brook lyn, the other in Camden) were animated by no conscious pur pose. They just blew their tops, and what happened happened. The men in the Kremlin HAVE a conscious purpose. Their pur pose is to conquer the world and bring all the people in it under the sway of ineir wins. That is what makes them so dangerous. HOW are we to handle them? I don't know. I don't think anyone knows. The pitiful part of it all, I think, is that so few of us realize how terrible is the menace of these men in the Kremlin who are just as crazy as these individuals in Brooklyn and Camden but whose power to destroy is so FANTASTIC ALLY greater.
