Ashland Council
Reviews Forest
Sale, Water Rate
Ashland. Mar. 8 Ashland city
councilmen last night voted to
place a charter amendment on
the May 19 primary election bal
lot, which would clear the way
lor sale of forested lands in
Ashland canyon to the forest
service. The proposed sale has
been discussed for more than a
year, and was once approved be
fore legal difficulties held it up.
The special water rate com
mittee recommended to the
council that water rates be kept
unchanged for a year until re
sults of a new metering plan can
be determined, but councilmen
set a special meeting next Tues
day to discuss the matter fur
ther. The Question is related to
budget matters, which will have
to be voted on in May, and coun
cilmen are anxious to get the sit
uation clarified.
Radio station KW1N was
granted the right to tape-record
council sessions for later broad
cast, after Mayor Thomas Wil
liams broke a tie vote to approve
the station's request.
Action Delayed
Action on a proposed ordi
nance to place responsibility for
juvenile delinquency upon par
ents was held up pending a su-
fireme court decision on a simi:
ar ordinance passed in Eugene.
Lease of the city golf course
was again considered, but action
was postponed until councilmen
"sound out" community senti
ment on the proposal.
Mayor Williams will name
members for the now-innetive
city planning commission, it was
indicated, following explanation
of an injunction suit filed re
cently in regard to a re-zoning
ordinance. City Attorney Harry
Skerry Jr. said that the city had
followed improper procedure,
and that planning commission
approval should have been ob
tained prior to passage of the
ordinance.
