) Applegate Extension Sets Workshop Date; Demonstration Given Applegate March 14 was set as the date for a local workshop for making lampshades which will be conducted by Mrs. Bob Webb and Mrs. Loran Cooper at one of their homes, according to plans made at the meeting of Applegate Extension unit Wed nesday at the home of Mrs. John Byrne. Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Cooper conducted a demonstra tion on making of shades, and recovering old ones, and 12 of the women present planned to meet on the above date to make their own shades. A demonstration on the use of electricity was given during the morning session of the Wednes day meeting by Mrs. Ed Bamsay and Mrs. Rolland Smith, double topics being given due to omis sion of the January meeting. De fining electricity as a form of energy, the leaders gave a dis cussion of the electrical terms, ampere, volts, watts and kilo watt, and talked on the opera tion of circuits, fuses and meters. They also talked on how to use electricity to the best advan tage in the home and gave de tailed precautions on how to use the numerous appliances in the home at one time without involv ing danger to wiring or equip ment. Mrs. Clifton Childers and Mrs. Dave Winningham were named leaders to represent the unit at a cancer control meeting to be held in Medford March 15th by Mrs. Blanche Frisbe, county health nurse. Mrs. Fred West and Mrs. Lance Offenbacher, with their husbands, are representing the unit at a square dance school in Medford conducted by the state college extension service. An added feature of the lunch hour was modeling of a hat of ancient vintage by Mrs. Clarence Meier, who said she had been presented the hat at Upper Ap plegate Grange by Mr. and Mrs. Bert Harr. It seems Mrs. Meier's hat boxes had been robbed by her husband in order to obtain felt to repair the Grange piano. A box of candy also was pre sented the unit women from Hi ram Head. The luncheon carried out the St. Patrick's motif and was in charge of Mrs. Rolland Smith. The April meeting will be "Im proved Home Lighting" by Miss Eula Wintermote, and will be held at the home of Miss Mollie Ray. Twenty-three women at tended the last meeting with Mrs. C. G. Godlove of lower Ap plegate a guest. Howard Unit To Hold Meeting On Thursday Howard Extension unit has announced a meeting for Thurs day, March 9 at 10:30 a.m. in the home of Mrs. William H. Strauss, Old Pacific highway. A lesson on "Getting the Most Out of Electricity," will be giv en by Mrs. Verlcna Gier and Mrs. Dwight Funk. Mrs. V. E. Rush of Medford will give a dem onstration on "Textile Painting." Members are asked to bring table service and an old, but good electrical cord or extension to be repaired. Carter was, re elected president of the Medford Council of Parents and Teachers at a meeting held Thursday at the Oakgrove school with the Oakgrove unit as hostesses. Others elected for the new year to begin in June were Mrs. W. T. Frost, first vice-president: Mrs. John W. Danforth, second vice-president; Mrs. W. R. Welty, secretary, and Mrs. Lee Gustison, treasurer. Retiring officers are Mrs. Lew Gilman, first vice-president; Mrs. Henry Padgham, second; Mrs. A. L. Randle, secretary, and Mrs. Frank Ragsdale, treasurer. " Mrs. L. G. Gentner of the Medford Garden club was prin cipal speaker for the meeting and stated "just as your PTA organization is planning for the peace and contentment of your children, the nurture of flowers and shrubs can bring content ment to the homemaker who is left with the dirty dishes after the family has departed for the day." Mrs. Gentner then told of the nature and care necessary for each of the plants which were auctioned for the benefit of the organization and which had been contributed by members. Mrs. Robert Church was auctioneer and dressed for the part in the gardening theme complete with implements. During the business meeting a full report of the dental pro gram headed by Mrs. Church was given and it was decided that the six Medford dentists who in stigated the program and gave the fluorine treatments to five-year-old children throughout the school district without charge should be more widely recog nized. These included Dr. Lee Mellish, who was in charge: Dr. George Goodrich, Dr. Virgil Mohr, Dr. L. Paul Walker. Dr. Bruce Stanley and Dr. Frank Roberts. It was also decided that a vote of appreciation be' sent to the school administration for recent progressive steps in the teaching of social hygiene in the schools. Mrs. Frank Conner, chairman of the PTA state mental hygiene committee and co-chairman of the social hygiene committee for the Jackson County Public Health association, told of the close relationship in the tow programs and asked for any sug gestions which might be helpful to parents and which might be carried out by the association. Mrs. Carter was elected dele gate and Mrs. Gustison alternate for the parent-teacher convention to be held in Portland April 25, 26 and 27. Phoenix Club President Talks At PTA Meeting; Committees Announced Phoenix A. C. Lewis spoke on Phoenix Community club at the last meeting of Phoenix Parent-Teacher association. Mr. Lewis, president of the club, ex plained what the club will mean in the life of the community. Five members of Glenn Ap lin's dramatic class discussed communtiy life. The high school group included Charles Swift. Edwin Jack, Ronnie Robbins, Nancy Macy and Wanda Norton. Named to the nominating com mittee were Mrs. Arch Brown, Mrs. M. C. Yarnell and Miss Ma bel Sims. Mrs. Glenn Aplin, Mrs. M. D. Groves. Mrs. Marvin Fisher, Mrs. Central Point Lodge Entertains Visitors; Meeting Is Announced Central Point A group of members of the Ashland Re bekah lodge were visitors for the last meeting of Mt. Pitt Re bekah lodge in Central Point. The visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Bibeau, Mrs. Larder and Mr. and Mrs. Gray. Purpose of their visit was to urge attendance of all Rebekahs at a meeting of the Northwest Oddfellow association in Gold Hill Sunday, March 12, at 2 p. m. Promotion of Oddfellowship is the prime objective of the associ ation. Refreshments will be served at the Gold Hill meeting by the Ashland lodge. Another visitor was Mrs. Ot tosen of the Rebekah lodge in Juliette, Ida. Mrs. Ottosen spoke briefly on activities and work done by her organization. The meeting, over which Mrs. Forest W. Thomason. noble grand, presided, concluded with refreshments served by Mrs. Marie Pierce, Mrs. James M. Weidman and Mrs. William Musty. Delegation Talks Convention Plans To discuss plans for the an nual convention of the Oregon Federation of Garden clubs, which will oe held in Klamath Falls this year, a group oi mem bers from the Klamath Falls Garden club were in Medford recently. Tliey met with Mrs. R. T. Nicho!, vi 'e-prpsident of the Siskiyou district. The convention will be June 13. 14 and 15. The delegation was he tded by Mrs. E. B. Redmond, president of the Klamath Falls club. Mrs. Charley Hostess For Lake Creek Group Lake Creek Mrs. Leland Charley was hostess for the last meeting of the Lake Creek Ex tension unit, which met in her home March 1. Sixteen members and two visitors were present. Mrs. Davidson taught the les son "Getting the Mast from Electricity." Roll call was answered with spring gardening ideas. Next meeting will be held April 5 at the home of Mrs. E. E. Meyers. A. L. Morin and Mrs. Arthur H. MacKintosh were appointed on the summer roundup committee. Refreshments were served by mothers of the high school stu dents, including Mrs. A. H. Dud ley, Mrs. Ray Hendrickson and Mrs. Alfred Schroeder. Bean said to day. The measure lost earlier by a 3-2 vote. Approval by the council would permit placement of the measure on the ballot May 19 for voters consideration.
