As they approached the tiny Berlin, the trawler skipper sig naled to the Mullers to lower their sails. Then they maneu vered close to the Berlin, threw a rope and took it in tow. JACKSON Tuttday, March 7, 1950 'Thriving Village' Finally Makes Grade Chicago. (U.R) Mayor Martin H. Kennclly turned over a let ter written 115 years ago to the Chicago Historical Society. The letter described Chicago as a thriving village. "Chicago Is a village taking its name from a small river that empties into Lake Michigan," the letter said. "The village is thriv ing as fast as any place is. or ever did In the United States, I dare say." The letter, dated Aug. 28, 1834, was from Moody Rowcll to his brother, Jacob, at Coventry, Vt. It was given to Kennclly by the rector of St. George's church, Drummondvillc, Quebec, who Wales three days before. The Mullers were taken to a restaurant for hot drinks and a meal. Beds were prepared for them but despite their weariless they refused to sleep ashore and returned to their tiny but be loved boat. It has only a couple of feet of freeboard and no engine. The small cockpit, "like the Black Hole of Calcutta," is cluttered with tanks and gear, and there is barely room to lie on the deck in a huddled position. Letter Quoted "I am told by the people of the town that last season there was but 20 houses in this town. Now they amount to about 350. It is truly astonishing to see the rapid growth of this place. "Last season I am told that six vessels landed at this place with from 75 to 200 tons of burden. This present season they are vis iting this place weekly . . .
