EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday. March 3. 1950 1 I. TTI lgw .J .41, paw aw Taaggfgg," ut I IK Ca O. i Tornado Results State Basketball Games Recalled As the time for the 32nd an MS 1 Ross, Atlas Conquer Dusette and LaBelle Tony Ron and the Great At las were too rough and tough for Georges Dusette and Pierre La Belle last night and won the tag team wrestling headliner at the armory. Ross and the Atlas gained a big advantage over their adver saries by continually outsmart ing Referee Earl Yoakley when he was attempting to break them. The first fall came when Ross forced LaBellc to yell "uncle" with a toe hold. Ross and his partner took turns in applying the pressure, thus not only add ing to LaBelle's discomfort but drawing yells of protest from the near-capacity crowd. Crowd Responds Between falls the Atlas and Ross refused to return to the ring until Promoter Mack Lil lard appealed to the crowd to cease throwing objects into the ring. The only fall for the French men came when LaBelle felled Ross with three drop kicks. La Belle had shoved Ross into a cor ner where Dusette was waiting for him. Dusette applied a full nelson from outside the ropes and held Ross while LaBelle ap plied the finisher. The Atlas and Ross turned their illegal stuff nearly to per fection to trap LaBelle in a half crab, with the Atlas applying the pressure, to gain the winning duke. Dusette Shows Ire Dusette, burned over the out come and the way it was ob tained, jumped into the ring and took turns shaking Ross and the Atlas with full nelsons before it was broken up. Norval Stockstill, substituting for the injured LceGrable, turn ed in one of the best matches of his spotty career but lost two straight falls to the veteran Karl Gray in the opener. Lillard announced that he is arranging an outstanding card for next Thursday. Among those already signed are Pete Belcas tro, Frank Stojack, Tony Ross, Georges Dusette and the Great Atlas. nual class A high school basket ball tournament nears local cage fans are recalling the four times that Medford high took part with the Black Tornado winning two titles and losing a pair. The tournament opens this year at Eugene March 14. Medford copped its first title in 1924 when it defeated Eugene by a score of 21 to 15, according to unofficial information. The second time the Black Tornado took top honors was in 1929 when it toppled Astoria 35 to 14. Lost In 1928 And 1939 The local youths came out second best in 1928 when they dropped a 27 to 23 decision to Washington (Portland) and again in 1939 when the Tornado lost out to Salem 34 to 26. Salem has won the state cham pionship trophy six of the 31 times the state tourney has been held and has been runner-up on eight other occasions for the best record of any team. Astoria has taken six tourney titles but appears to be out of the running this year. Basketball prospect in Med ford look unusually bright for three or four years to come with several "natural" players com ing up from the junior high team to the senior high squad next year and another group of youths with talent due to appear there In about two years. The varsity or ninth grade quintet at the junior high has Just finished two basketball sca ons that saw it lose but one game out of the 25 or 30 played. Whil in eighth grad team does not hav quit as bright record over two yean it has lost but a small number, in-, eluding only two or three this iMion. This corner may be putting Itself out on the limb but far but we believe that by 1953 at the latest, the Medford high bas ketball team will be playing once again in the state tourney Should the crop of cageri now 91 me junior nign neveiop hb fast and as thoroughly in the next next three years at it has In the last two. the Black Tor nado should be one of the best in the state. Everyone in the sports writ ing business has a style of ex pression and all newspapers fol low a style that to the reader and understander of sports makes story about a basket ball game, or a baseball game or even a cricket match something most of us can understand. The other day a newspaper from Granton-on-Spay in Scot land cam to Th Mail Trib une and In it was a writaup of torn sporting vnt that p u t 1 d th iporti-mlndd news staff. Here are a few quotations just to show you what we mean: "Adopting the wrong tactics on a treacherous pitch close passing and a tendency to walk the ball home led to Grantown making their exit from the Strathspey Welfare F. A. Char ity cup when they went under by the odd goal In three to league champions Craigrllachie. "Play was fnirly even In the first half and both goals had narrow escapes. Craig got the only goal when a home player handled in the box and Stewart netted from the spot . . . Th Crantown dloni wr too olttn llxti and sevens . . . Th wing halvn worked hard all through . . . Th Inild nan wr Ineffective ..." For those unfamiliar with Eng lish sports, the game being played was their version of football. One of the most important items that makes a big differ ence between a sports champion and a runner-up or last place club is condition. This applies to non-school sports as well as to boy and girls students taking part in athletics. Rogue River high Is a good example of a B school basketball squad being in top physical con dition being able to "outrun" its opponents and thus wearing them down. Medford high is a fin x ampl ol an A school basket ball and football squad that might b slow In starting but could kp up a fast pac or van Increase th pac In th scond half. This not only can tlr an opponent out but can increase the ratio of local goals mad or those missed. Did You Know Medford was offered two topnotch bas ketball games between major Coast conference colleges if it had had the facilities to care for a crowd of at least 2.500 people?
