Home Destroyed jPlay Performers By Blaze, Chief To Arrive For Asks Cooperation ' A small house was destroyed and surrounding buildings were threatened by fire of undeter mined origin between 11:10 p.m. and midnight yesterday, at 531 Marie street, firemen reported this morning. The residence of Mrs. Lucie Wilcox was burned to the ground. While the fire started outside the city limits, firemen respond ed to a general alarm because property inside the city was be ing threatened, according to Act ing Chief Leo Weidner. The fire was not permitted to spread. Hamoerad in Work Firemen were considerably hampered in their work because of curious citizens who followed the enaines in automobiles, Weidner said. In this particular instance, the only water avail able was carried in a pumper, and had the water run out, the engine could not have gotten out to obtain more because of cars blocking the way, the chief renorted. Weidner said, and he au- nealeri to the rniblic to give fire men plenty of room in which to work, and to leave access to the fire area clear. Firemen who were at the scene reported that neighbors took up a collection of money from spec tators to be given to Mrs. Wil cox, owner of tne 'destroyed building. Two Other Fires Two other fires were reported vesterdav. At 2 p.m.. firemen were called to extinguish a blaze which burned a play hut made bv children of grass, rags, sticks and twigs. It had been ignited by matches with which some of them were playing, firemen be lieve. The fire was at 110 Al mond street. A call was received from the Community hospital at 4:24 p.m when a circulating oil heater flooded. No damage was re ported. Resignation Of Rabbi Brings Speculation Portland, Ore., Mar. 2 (U.R) Announcement here yesterday of the acceDtance of Rabbi haul u Appelbaum's resignation by the Beth Israel Temple board open ed speculation today the board would try to bring Rabbi Alvin 1. Fine of ban rancisco to Portland. No reason for the sudden resignation by Rabbi Appelbaum was given by Frank Fink, presi dent oi the congregation. He saici no official comment would be given until the congregation had been notified. No date for the resignation to take effect was given. DOKK To Meet Under New Leadership Here Fuhat Burkan temple No. 224 Dramatic Order of Knights of Khorassan, will hold their monthly meeting Saturday. March 4. in the Pythian build ing, north Grape and Fifth streets, at 8 p.m. Business of im portance will be brought up at this time. It will be the first meeting of the year under the new officers with Royal Vizier Chester Bak er in charge. Committees and appointments for the new year will be named at this time. Savannah, Ga. (U.R) Robert Green, 33, was arrested and charged with hitting Dolly Gil yard and Timothy Wimberly with a can of dog food. Friday Showing The company of Civic Drama guild players and technicians will arrive in Medford tomor row for their Friday perform ance here of the comedy, "Fair and Warmer." A cast of six, in cluding Broadway and summer stock veterans, will appear on the senior high school stage in the second play of this season's drama festival, sponsored annu ally by the Medford 20-30 club. Proceeds will benefit the club's youth fund. Due to an' unusual demand, Committee Chairman Bill Law rence said both reserved seat and general admission tickets will be placed on sale at Puruck er's Piano house Friday from noon until 5 p. m. After that, the boxoffice will be opened at the auditorium beginning at 7 p. m. until curtain time at 8:15 p. m. i Tickets for the final drama fes-1 aival production, "Peg o' My , Heart," will also be available. That performance is set for April 22. Past Legion Commander To Reassume Position .... Ashland, Mar. 2 John von Kuhlmann, past commander of Post 14, American Legion, was named by the executive com mittee of the post to serve as commander the rest of the year, when the group met here earlier this week. Von Kuhlmann will serve out the unexpired term of Kenneth Miller, who recently resigned to attend school in San Francisco. The new commander was head of the Ashland Legion post for four terms before Miller was elected. Canon City, Colo. John Kenneth Caligaris, came into the world with four teeth, two in his lower jaw and two in the upper. Miss Truman Unaware Of Salary As Singer Edinburg, Tex., Mar. 2 IU.R' Margaret Truman said today that she doesn't know how much money she is making as a con cert singer. She added that she isn't worrying about the ap proaching March 15 income tax deadline. Miss Truman, In Edinburg for a concert today, said Kenneth L.
