TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Redskins vs. Westport, 8:15 Tonight in Basketball Game Bv Hank Green Ashland, Mar. 2 Brookings will meet Oakland, ure., at v p.m. and Jacksonville is slated to take on Westport at 8:15 p.m. today in second round games of the Southern Oregon college in vitational basketball tourney. Jacksonville entered the sec ond round last night by easily defeating Phoenix high 44 to 25 and Westport edged St. Mary's high of Medford 40 to 37. Afternoon Games This afternoon Butte rails was scheduled to play Uold mil ai 3:30 and Talent was billed to tnkp nn Lorano at 2:15. The Tab ent vs. Lorane game was a third round contest while the late aft ernoon fray was a second rouna tilt. Butte Falls entered the second roun d by downing Bandon 52 to 37 and Gold Hill got that far by edging Elkton 32 to 31. Talent stopped cresweii oa 10 it an" Lorane edged Valsctz 34 to 32. Prospect entered the consola tion round by losing to Oakland 40 to 24 and Brookings edged Paislev 49 to 29. OSC and Huskies Play This Week Corvallis, Mar. 2 Oregon State's basketball team will trav el to Seattle this week-end for Its final pair of games against slumping University of Wash ington. The Beavers, now carrying an 8-8 mark, arc two full games behind leading Washington State and would have to sweep the Seattle series while the Cougars were dropping their last two to Idaho to finish in a tie for the loop title. Oregon State can do no worse than tie for second and one win over Washington would give Slats Gill's men undisputed pos session of runner-up spot. Washington and Oregon State broke even in their Initial meet ing this season at Corvallis with the Beavers winning the first night, 56-48 and the Huskies coming back strong for a 52-44 decision. Prtrrsen is the defending titleholder. Siilkeld said he had agreed to terms for a lS-round bout after the Portland Boxing rommlssion last week demanded that he defend or relinquish the crown. There was never much doubt as to who would be the winner as the Chieftains from the Rogue valley dominated the game from the start. The Rogue River quin tet had Just too mufh height for the Sacred Heart crew. Gene Depuy High Gene Depuy with 15 and t'ete Purrier who garnered 18 points led the winners. Rogue River led at the first quarter whistle 19 to 6, at the half 33 to 15, at the third quar ter 37 to 22 and at the automatic time out 47 to 28. Don Fawcett Seeks Place Medford will play "give and take" with the Oregon state col lege baseball team this season, according to a news release froi.i Corvallis received today. The "give" will be Don Faw cett, ex-Medfnrd high athlete. who as a sophomore will be bat tling for a Job at second base for the Beavers' nine this year. Frank Roclandt, present Tor nado basketball coach, is the "take" as he was batting cham pion for the northern division OSC team last year and ace catcher. Fawcett has played consider able semi-pro baseball as well as school experience. He played for the Medford Craters and for one of the Central Point teams in the Southern Oregon league. Keith Wade One Of Top Scorers Captain Keith Wade of South ern Oregon college basketball team placed third in average points per game and fifth in total points for 12 games played in Far Western conference this past season, official statistics from conference statisticians announc ed today. Wado scored 60 field goals and 54 free throws for a total of 174 points in 12 games or an average of 14.5 per game. Best average was 15.8 points by Boh Marsh of Humboldt and second best was 15.1 by Vere Butler of Chico. Bill O'Neal of SOC had 120 points in 12 games for a 10-point average to place ninth and John larger of the Haiders scored 103 in 12 games for an 8.6 average to be 11th. Atlas Irkad The tag team match became possible last" week, when the vain Atlas, irked over LaBelle's assistance as a second for Du sette, telephoned Ross to secure him as a partner and then chal lenged the two Frenchmen. Du sctte and LaBelle fell over them selves to accept the challenge and Dusette, who held the un beaten Atlas to a draw last week. said there will be no doubt as to the outcome toniehi. The opener, over the same route, will send Lee Grable against Karl Gray, starting at 8:30 p.m. Grable was to test his injured lee out last night and if the appendage responded satis factorily, he would grapple Here. No word was received late this morning and it was presumed he would be ready for action. Foursquare and St. Mary's Win Foursquare church will meet St. Mary's Catholic at 8 p.m. after a prelim between St. Peter's Lutheran and Hrst Presbyterian starling at 7 p.m. in the finals ft-r the local Church Basketball league title Saturdav at the YMCA. Last night Foursquare entered Hie chanioionship round bv downing St. Peter's 36 to 20 while St. Mary's reached the title game by edging First Pres byterian 14 to 12 in a close game. Saturday night, March 18. St. Mary's and Foursquare as lead ing teams in the Medford league will meet the two top teams of the Ashland Church league on the Medford floor. Frank Rush 3rd In Rifle Shoot Medford Rifle club announced Inst night that Frank Rush plac ed third in the gallery tourna ment held Inst Sunday in Port land by the Portland Rifle club where approximately 200 shoot ers competed. The tournament was the largest gallerv event ever held bv any rlub west of the Missis sippi, officials stated. A. I. B. tourney at Portland March 6 but that didn't seem to bother them a bit as last night the Raiders ran over Oregon col lege 71 to 55. While the Raiders' margin nev er was more than 10 points and seldom did it go over 5 points, there never seemed much doubt as to who would be victor. It was a rought affair from the start with a total of 59 fouls be ing called, 33 on Oregon college of Education and 26 on SOC Three Raiders left in the last half due to five personal fouls and four were banished from the OCE team for th esame reason. Capt. Keith Wade of the SOC quintet once again paced the point-making as he poured in 17 points. March 2 UR) Billy the kid set out to re deem himself as a major league manager today, "confident" that he will make good. Shrugging off the grimness which marked his methodical ways in former years, the kid belied his 57 years as he vowed to "hold the interest of his Bos ton Braves. That would be different from last year when a mid-season re volt forced him to the sidelines to keep my health. But that's all water over the dam now, and "things are going to be different" so far as the kid Billy Southworth is concern ed he holds no grudges and is starting out anew. Detroit, Bruins Stop Opponents In Hockey By United Press The Madison Square Garden Jinx which has haunted the De troit Red Wings of the National Hockey league all season was thoroughly shattered today. The Red Wings, who only clicked for four goals in as many previous New York appearances this season, boiled over for five tallies Inst night as they laced the New York Rangers 5 to 2. The victory moved the first place Wings nine points ahead of Toronto as the Maple Leafs were taking a 5 to 2 pasting from the Boston Bruins. Tags Given Free The tags, which will be given free to all anglers, will be avail able at commission license agen cies or at county courthouses. The cards will contain a num ber of detachable tags. When a salmon or steelhead more than 20 inches in length is caught, a tag must be torn from the card and attached to the fish. The date and name of the stream where fish is taken must be written on the card in the space provided. The cards will be retained by anglers until May 31, 1951, when they should be returned to tne commission for study of the catch. Moore Wins Bowser Cup Jim Moore, Medford, walked off with the Bowser handicap trophy shoot held recently at the Central Point Sportmen's club grounds after a shoot off be tween Jim Ross, Paul Culbert- son and Moore, it was revealed today. The three shooters were tied at the end of the regular 50-bird event with 48 out of 50. Ross of Central Point won the runner up trophy and Culbertson took third position. In the 16-yard event. Max Kul be posted the highest score of the day by smashing 50 straight to win the class C and D trophy with Ray Coleman runner-up in this class with a 48. Jantzer Places First Ted Jantzer was first in the class A and B event after break ing 25 straight in a shoot off with Jim Horn and Sam Samson. The three were tied at the end of the regular 50-bird event with 49 each. Horn took second hon ors in a shootoff with Samson by breaking 74 out of 75 to Sam son's 73. A special 12-pair doubles event was won by Horn with a score of 22 while Clyde Fox and Dick Skeeters tied for second with 21. Ore gon state game director, to day reminded anglers that fish ing in all Oregon coastal streams it closed until open ing of the general trout season April 15. The April 15 opening will be effective in all coastal streams except the Rogue and Umpqua rivers which will be open to trout fishing May 1. CP. to Host Game Friday Central Point will be host to Illinois Valley (Kerby) in the only Southern Oregon conference-district 4 basketball game slated in the valley Friday night. The same evening tagie fouu will battle the undefeated Grants Pass Cavemen on the CP. floor. While neither the Pointers nor Illinois Valley have been exactly big sticks in either the Southern Oregon conference or in the J-D-J league this season, observ ers foresee a tight game as tney are about evenly matched. Grants Pass is exoected to have little trouble with the Eagles although the Eagle Point quintet gave the Cavemen a mighty rough .first half going over when the game was played at Eagle Point. The Cavemen eventually won but Coach Hank Anderson was somewhat wor ried. Medford high has completed its 1949-50 cage season. Volleyball Games Due Here This Evening The local volleyball league schedule games will be playea al the YMCA gym and the senior high girls' gym Thursday start ing at 7 p. m. with two games at each. Second game will start about 8:30 at both gymnasiums. Teachers will play Business men at 7 p. m. in the Y gym and about 8:30 it will be Camp White vs. Fruitmcn at the same place. Sponsors of the affair are fathers of the boys on the three squads. The affair will be tcaturea Dy dinner, moving pictures of Oregon State college basketball games provided by Coach Slats Gill of the Beavers and talks by several invited guests. Amone those invited to the banquet are Coaches Frank Roe- lanat, bod isewiana ana L,ee Ragsdale of the senior high and Coaches Mel Boldenow of the junior high varsity, Chief Mc Lean of the eighth grade team and Niles Smith of the seventh. Last fall a similar banquet for the three football squads was held in the school cafeteria with a large attendance of parents. Coach Al Simpson of Southern Oregon college was principal speaker. Whitey Pain Of Nugs Sold Riverside Club George "Whitey" Pain who hurled last season for the Med ford Nuggets (Rogues) of the Far West class D league, has been sold to Riverside, Cal., of the Sunset league (class C), Business manager Mel Carpenter of the local club said today. The popular lefthander won 10 and lost nine for the Nugs in 1949 but was out for much of the latter part of the season with an injured shoulder. Carpenter said he believed Pain would be of much help to Riverside and that he showed considerable promise while here. Roy Hewitt High Man Local Pistol Shooting Roy Hewitt was high man in the weekly shoot of the Medford Rifle club's pistol division this week with a 268 while Col. Ray mond Pflaum captured his first leg on the pistol handicap trophy when 30 shooters competed at Merrick's indoor range. Other high scores went to Paul Shelton with 267, Frank Rush 266.
