High Schools Near End of Cage Trail By United Prest Giants Pass clinched the dis trict 4 crown Friday night with a 59 to 34 victory over Central Point and Bend moved up as a threat to the state title with a 63 to 59 win over Salem in the final lap of Oregon state high school class A basketball play. While the favorites were mov ing along, Hillsboro and La Grande fell down in games that may not necessarily affect their chances in the state playoffs. Hilltboro Loses Hillsboro stumbled over Banks and the Banks five went home with a 36 to 34 triumph in dis trict 9. The playoff tournament, however, is a double elimination affair and Hillsboro, highly-regarded for state play, will have a chance at revenge. La Grande, favored in dis trict 1, was defeated by Pendle ton, 38-34, in the Blue Mountain league but the Pendleton win did not affect the district situation. Eugene bounded along in dis trict 6 with a 62-43 win over Oakridge and will meet Cottage Grove in a playoff. Cottage Grove downed Springfield 31-26. Jefferson and Roosevelt kept their deadlock in the Portland city race, the former beating Grant 73-58 and the latter win ning from Lincoln, 52-46. Alsea of Benton county was the first to qualify for the state class "B" tournament by win ning the district 3-B tournament in Eugene, with a close 27-26 tri umph over Brownsville. Beavers Stay Conference Champ Race By United Press If a Cougar could laugh, the Washington State college mascot probably would be snickering to day at the way the northern di vision Pacific Coast conference basketball race is legging it toward the finish line. Oregon State college, know ing that one loss would virtual ly hand the Cougars the title on a silver platter, dumped arch rival Oregon 51-42 Friday night. The University of Idaho Van dals slammed the door shut on any title aspirations the Wash ington Huskies may have held with a resounding 57-40 victory. Cougari Win Alio The Cougars, just to show their indifference to the goins- on, sauntered past Gonraga 52-34 in a non-conference tilt. Oregon State took the first of a two-game series against Oregon in a display of highly-accurate shooting. The Beavers bloke out of a close first half tussle which saw the score tied three times, with a 27-20 intermission lead. Earlv in the second half the Webfoots closed the gap to three points at 28-25 but Senior Guard Tommv Holir.pn made five quick pointsto give OSC a 36-32 lead and a comfortable margin tney retained the rest of the game Basketball FRIDAY'S RESULTS: Columia 74, Dartmouth 91 St. Francis 76. This last week's non-high tourney at Oak Grove school was no exception with perhaps the biggest surprise the Lone Pine victory over a highly-favored Oak Grove quintet 33 to 32 in an overtime Saturday to enter the tournament champion pionship finals. St. Mary's school also proved to be a somewhat surprising team in strength as it entered the title final game with Lone Pine Friday night by defeating How ard 26 to 25. Tornado Cagers Down Eagles Quint, 60 to 23 Getting a big, broad Jump at the start, Medford high's cagers outclassed Eagle Point 60 to 23 Friday night in a Southern Ore gon loop engagement at Eagle Point. Generally the Black Tornado has experienced stiff opposition from. the Eagles in the early part of contests. Friday night it was a different story. Medford count ed up 12 points before Eagle Point could score on Pat Sim mons' fcul toss at 4 minutes 30 seconds of the opening stanza. Medford Upt Lead At 6 minutes, Medford had broadened to 17 to 1. Eagle Point's only field goal of the frame was a gift when an over zealous Medfordite unlawfully slapped the net on Pat Simmon s shot that did not drop through the hoop. Mcdford's first quar ter lead was 21 to- 5. Halltimc count was 35 to 11 and third quarter score 48 to 19. j Reserves saw considerable ac-j tivity for Medford. Coach Frank ; Roclandt employed 14 hoopsters and 10 of them accounted for markers on the scoreboard. Con nie Holzgang. who got a late start in the tussle, headed the Tornado with 12 tallies.
