"Khovanchina," the beautiful musical folk drama by Moussorg-sky.- will be presented on the Metropolitan Opera matinee Sat urday at 11 a.m. Like "Boris Go dounow," the opera is based on historical events in Russia. It was not quite completed at the time of Moussorgsky's death and was revised and completed by Rinsky-Korsakov. Singing the principal roles will be Rise Stevens as "Marfa"; Charles Kullman as "Prince Ga- sMtsin," and Lawrence Tibbett as J'Prince Khovanskv." Two young men who have been making life pleasant for early morning radio listeners in the metropolitan New York area six times weekly, are bringing the same type of cheery banter and good natured frolicking to nighttime network on their pro gram "Night Shift with Rayburn and Finch'' heard each Saturday on KYJC from 9 to 9:30 p.m. Presentation of a National Railroad May Tutor Drivers On Caution Baltimore, Md. (U.R) The Baltimore and Ohio railroad has started a campaign to let drivers who go through B. and O. cross ings carelessly know about their slips. At grade crossing throughout the railroad's system, employees have been instructed to jot down the license numbers of drivers who make reckless crossings. Then the railroad sends the offender a card with "a friendly tip about a slip that might have been serious." The card tells the motorist the time and place of the careless crossing and points out the proper procedure. B. and O. officials say they have been checking drivers for 30 years and estimate that seven per cent make speedy or care less crossings. Birds In Stratosphere Puzzle Lady In Plane Seattle, Wash. (U.R) The crew of an American World air ways stratocruiser vouches for this story. A clipper was droning across the Pacific ocean at 23,000 feet. In the rear cargo compartment was a shipment of live chicks, noisily minding their own busi ness. Inside the lounge, Just for ward of the cargo compartment a woman passenger was sitting. Suddenly she cocked an ear toward the lounge door, then beckoned a steward. "Young man," she said, "aren't we getting a little low? I can hear birds.' Brady SCIATICA BY ANY Sciatica, sciatic neuritis and sciatic rheumatism may all be considered as the same thing, al though a tech nical distinc tion between them may be made. They all amount to a pain in the re gion of the sciatic nerve, p r incipally in the rear of the thigh, some times extend ing down into the leg. The disorder may be very slight or very severe, in some cases in capacitating a victim for months. For many years, the "bone out of place" notion of the cause of sciatica has had some adher ents. The particular bone or bones involved, seemed to vary with the bone-setter. The ilium, one of the pelvic bones which with the sacrum enters into the anatomy of the sacroiliac joint, seemed to be the bone most of ten indicated. This bone, accord ing to the bone-setters, was eith er displaced forward, backward, upward or downward. Anyway, it was supposed to be displaced. The diagnosis of the displace ment appeared to stem from the impression gained by the sensi tive, exploring fingers of the bone-setters. Inasmuch as this method of diagnosis could not be substantiated by any general ly acceptable means known to the great majority of physicians who claimed no particular sen siticity of the fingers or other oc cult powers, this idea was met with the Bronx ovation in most regular medical circles. Probably several thousand vic tims of sciatica have received the airplane spin, body slam (di rect and indirect) and single and multiple bone-snaps in the pro cess of replacing the alleged dis placement, during the years. Many have survived these ath letic seances with bigger and better sciaticas. Currently, the modern concept of sciatica appears to fall into three well defined categories. One of these involves the theory that an exaggerated angle exists at the point where the lowermost lumbar vertebra is joined to the sacrum by the intervening car tilaginous disc, or cushion. The exaggeration of the angle results from changes in the non-bony tis sues supporting this, the weakest area of the vertebral column. Next, the reflex muscle-ligament theory, Involving reflex stimulation from adjacent soft tissues arising from pressures and muscular spasm, a state of ten somewhat loosely described as "myositis," or "fibrositis," is a consideration which must be dis posed of in individual cases. Finally, the so-called "hern iated disc" theory looms very large as the cause of most cases of persistent sciatica. This has to do with a protusion of the disc or inter-vertebral cushion against one or more spinal nerves within the spinal canal. The complete Former Union Leader Convicted Of Perjury Washington, Feb. 24 (U.R) Former Union Leader Harold J Christoffel was convicted of five counts of perjury by a federal district jury today. The four men and eight wom en jurors deliberated more than three hours before they brought in their verdict at 3:50 p.m. EST. Christoffel was convicted of lving to the house labor commit tee in March, 1947, when he denied under oath that he was a communist. Federal Judge F. Dickinson Letts then committed Christoffel to jail pending sentence. He re jected Roggc's plea that Christof fel be permitted to stay iree on higher bail. Hollywood, Feb. 24 (U.R) Actress Ann Sothern was recov ering "satisfactorily" today from a delicate throat operation to re move a growth on her thyroid gland. Voteler has pleaded guilty and aaked for mercy. OTHER NAME cure of many cases of persistent sciatica by surgical correction of this abnormality attests to the value of the concept. The determination of the cause of sciatica involves much more than merely feeling in the region of the lower spine. The pronun ciamento, after a few minute9 of this fumbling, to the effect that a "bone is out of place," should be sufficient to cause the wary and weary victim to shop around for another guess elsewhere. Perhaps no more than 25 per cent of the victims of herniated disc require operation. Medical treatment along conservative lines, with avoidance of stren uous athletic maneuvers, brings permanent relief to m a n y of these cases. The same holds true with cases falling into the pre ceding two categories. Delibera tion and thoroughness of exam ination incident to the diagnosis is absolutely essential as not all cases which are operated upon can be guaranteed in advance, of a cure. If you have sciatica, get a diagnosis first. Sciatica is a symptom, not a diseases. Find out what is causing it, and then proceed to the matter of appro priate treatment.
