By Hank Green Green's confectionery team of Mcdford left little doubt in the minds of basketball fans last night that it was the better quin tet among Mcdford area AAU teams as it rallied in the second half to wallop the Rogue River (own team 68 to 46 at the senior high gym. Rogue River started like a house afire to run up a 14 to 11 first quarter lead nnd hold the confectionery quintet on almost " even terms in the last quarter. However, the Green's learn , rapped in 40 points to 15 for the ' Rogues in the middle quarters to help Win. The game started slowly with ' neither team showing too much In the way of accuracy but a big . tall fellow by the name of Hun ' toon for Rogue River display ing good coordination and bas- ' kct - making ability under the , other basket. . i Fouled Out Late I Had this fellow not fouled out . In the last half the score might : well have, been closer than it i was. , Green's showed again that it can outrun- most opponents and f It did so In that last half, indi cating the players are in good l shape and although the storemcn ;, lack height, can give an oppo : nent a rough time by just out running him. ' The victorious quintet lacked the services of its high-scoring ace Tex Gatlln but still others came through In the clinch to ' help the cause. Palmer joined !lhe squad once again to push in 12 points and Busack and Wer ner each got 11 for high scorers ' among the locals. Other games of the first round tomorrow will find Howard playing Shady Cove at 0 p. m St. Mary's meeting West Side at 7 p. m. and Lone Pine taking on Applegate an hour later. Friday at 10 a. m. 'Bowser Cup' At CP Sunday Central Point, Feb. 22 The annual Bowser trophy shoot of the Central Point Sportsman's club will be held Sunday, Feb ruary 28, starting about noon, it was announced today. The club's traps will open about 10 a.m. for a 18-yard event that will open the day. The shoot to be held at the CP. club's grounds near the baseball park and west or the railroad tracks, will find four men seeking their second leg on the trophy. A man must lake the cud three times in a row to gain permanent possession. H. K. Bowser originally put up the trophy four years ago and since then, in order, the follow ing have captured "one leg on it, James Ross, .lini Glcason, Harry Elden and Bay Watklns Anyone may enter the Bowser Ironhv shoot whether a member of the club or not, officers said. Alaska Mushing Champ Race Awaited By Dogs Anchorage, Alaska, Feb. 22 (U.R) Twenty-three mtishers and more than ISO dogs today were awaiting the starter's call in the Alaska championship mushing races. The finest drivers in Alaska and two experts from the United States will vie for (he S3.000 ill cash prizes in the 100-mile race which will decide the Alaskan dog sled champion. Cavemen Top Local Boxers Dean Pratt, Medford, high 135- Kounder, won the only decision y a Black Tornado boxer last night when the local boxing team met Grants Pass in a ser ies of matches at the Cavemen's gym. Medford youths gained four draws and dropped four deci sions in addition. Piatt gained a decision over Mullen, although many of those from Medford watching the bouts thought the Tornado de served three or four other nods that went as draws also. Gaining draws were Coe Brown, Mickey Loros, Chuck Chllwood and Royal Johnson. Local youths losing decisions were Lee Lucas, Steve Crippen, Wayne Tysver and G a y 1 c Christlieb. The local youths will put on a boxing exhibition among themselves at Camp White on March 3 and the following Fri day, March 10, Medford boxers will meet Roseburg youths at Roscbtirg. Medford Gun Club Closed Medford Gun club traps and clubhouse will be closed Sunday, February 28, so members can take part In the Bowser cup trap shoot at the Central Point Sports men's club, Secretary Ed Pease announced this morning. Last Sunday in the season's first registered P.I.T.A. shoot, 25 out of town seattergunners were among the 00 persons taking part at the local club. Dick Skeeters, James Moore and Sammy Samson were tied for first place in the 100 16-yard event with 98 out of a 100. Moore won the shootoff of the tie. In the 50-blrd handicap, Ted Janlzer and Dick Hervey tied for lop spot with -19 out of 50 and Jantzer won the shoot off. Dick Skeeters took top honors in the 25-pair doubles with 45 out of 50. Feb. 22 (U.R) Branch Rickey, the shrewd, bushy-browed boss of the Brooklyn Dodgers, today struck back at charges that he paid "coolie wages," claiming that his team is as high-salaried as any In baseball. In announcing the signings oi Pitchers Preacher Roe, the club's ace left-hander, and Clem La bine, rookie right-hander, Rick ey disclosed that his 1950 team win be the highest paia in Brooklyn history and cited two arguments in defense of his sal ary policies. No Holdouts Cited The 67-ycar-old Rickey said that since he became president of the Dodgers in 1943, the club never had a holdout and never cut a player's salary until this season. Rickey admitted, however, that two players were asked to take pay cuts for 1950 and that one of them probably would be come the Dodgers' first serious holdout in eight seasons. He did not identify the play ers, but the two offered pay slashes were believed to be Catcher Bruce Edwards and Pitcher Rex Barney. The commission voted to grant to Mack Lillard an exclusive franchise to conduct professional boxing and wrestling In Jackson county for 1950. ; The commission voted to trans fer to the civic emergency fund $450. The commission called to the attention of the people of Jackson county that the commis sion was created by state law and is appointed by the mayor, with the approval of the city council, and that its jurisdiction is all of Jackson county, except ing only such cities as have commission of their own. Its jurisdiction is specifically limited to professional boxing and professional wrestling. State law specifically exempts any boxing tournament given under the sanction or auspices of the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, or any of its auxiliary organizations, in which only registered members of said union or organizations participate.
